1990 F150 XLT Lariat Ext cab...what length bed?
 

Hi everyone! First of all, let me apologize for my ignorance in all things truck related. I'm looking at buying my first truck purely for occasionally hauling things around to my rental property and for moving. My budget is pretty tight on this, $2500 or less and I can fix most things myself - I've rebuilt a few 4 cyl engines and transmissions.

I started looking for trucks on craigslist and found a few f150s with a straight 6 which I hear is a very reliable engine.

Went to check one out yesterday and it is a '90 xlt lariat extended cab. The owner stated in the post that it was a long bed, but I forgot to measure it when I went out there. Now that I look at the pictures, the bed doesn't look that long - I'd guess it at 6', not 8'. Does the extended cab in the long bed (I'd rather say long wheel base) take away from the length of the bed?

On most extended cab vesions of these trucks the bed is 7ft, but the full 8ft bed was also an option.

I know of a 95 Eddie Bauer that had an 6.5 bed and it was a ext. cab

That's definitely a short bed. 6.5' long. You can find extended cab long beds, but they are rare. It's much easier to find a long bed with a regular cab.

It's easy to spot the difference between the two. They cut the bed off in front of the rear wheels, so on a short bed, the distance between the fender well and the front of the bed is 1.5' shorter. Once you know what you're looking for, you will be able to spot each right away.

I have the longbed version.(Don't go through Taco bell with one.) You will really notice the difference when you see one. But the short bed versions R easy to handle and park

Yeah that is a shortbed which is i think about 6.5 feet maybe more maybe less would have to measure a supercab longbed would be longer than that truck they are beasts

OK since someone else brought the subject... (often wanted to ask but was skeered to:-lamesign )

From the inside of my tailgate to the inside of the front box rail is 80 inches, less than 7ft & greater than 6.5

So what do I got?

short bed long bed is 96" long

Short beds, up to 97 anyway, were 6 3/4' according to Ford.

Long beds have always been 8'.

The ext. cabs biggest bed i think they have is 7.5 but could be mistaken. On the new F150 the options are 5.5, 6.5, 7.5

I've got a 94 extended cab with an 8 foot bed. Nice to be able to simply slide a 4x8 foot sheet of plywood or sheetrock right in. However, they are a beast to do a U-turn in. Takes me all three lanes on a divided highway. Yep, and look out for those drivethru's. Some of them can be tough. If I had to do it over again, I'd probably pass on the ext cab as my grandson is now old enough to ride up front. He's my shadow so all purchases have to figure him into the picture, LOL.
