opinion on a flat 6 .
 

i got a flathead six out of a 48 , i think , f-1 that's been stored for about six months now in my unks morton building .it was / is a running motor , the crazy went dark put a ch--y in it . i was just curious on wether it'd be worth hanging on too or just sell it . im kinda a packrat and been looking for yet another yard ornament to put it in but thats not a good idea as i got work to do to my present two . it's got a top loader three speed behind it maybe four been awhile since i was out there . so worthy or just peddle it ? if it was another v-8 i'd lock it away .

me personally, im all about saving every flatty out there from recycling. even if it means becoming a lawn ornament. The 3/4 spd might be handy to have a round

The 6 had alot of good points over the 8, if it turns over (not seized) I'd take steps to prevent it from seizing and then eithe store it or demand a arm and/or a leg for it.

i have a flathead 239 with a 3 speed out of my 49f1, a flathead 6 with a 4 speed from my parts truck. every body want's me to give them away cheap.the flat 8 was running like a watch when i pulled it out last spring. the 6 turns over.before i let them go cheap,they will become yard items. the 8 will stay in the corner in the garage.it don't eat and isn't in the way. my 2 cent's worth.have a great day. tracy

so its worthy . cool at least it's inside out of the weather and i filled the cylinders with some oil as its all i had at the time and put the plugs in it . i got rid of the 302 and some other stuff , so i might just bring it home now and make the wife happy lol. had a line on an old rusty model t the guy was wanting towed out of his property but as usual day late dollar short . was wanting to put it in there . well thanx guys .it'll be here for awhile .

yeah but i still got the two fe's !! beleive it or not the p.o. of my 53 was gonna pull the flatty and put in the 302 ! twerent no way iwas . i've wanted a flathead for freaking years !!!!!!!!!:-X22

i would add my two cents worth. In the late 70's & early 80's for several years back on the farm we fed corn sileage every morning, shoveling it out of the 16' box on a 1949 F6. we started with it filled about half full, got our exercise for sure. This fine old devil was powered with what I think may be the big brother to your F1 6 cylinder, i believe it was a 254 cubic inch. yours i think maybe 226 cubic inch. What a sweet engine it was, smooth as silk, very good cold weather starter, not a gas hog. Man would it pull, a good thing too since we were commonly in deep mud. You definitely want to keep your engine, you would like it!

Heck that rant now s making me look for anoher 1/2 ton then instead of doing another V8 lookin for a I6.

I recently bought a 52 F6 that originally had a 254 six, but the power is being provided by a 360. It still has the 4 spd synchro tranny. This truck is destined to become a parts truck as support for my 48 F6 grain truck. Between the two I can put together one good one.

I love inlines - my first car had a 225 slant six (72 Duster) and my first truck had a 300 (77 F100). I currently drive a 97 Cummins in addition to my 48 daily driver. Haven't had a flat one tho - all my flatties are V8's.

Good luck on what sounds like a great project, can't go wrong with a 1948 F6, good old units.

I too have a 300 mounted in my 1970 F250, i could listen to that thing forever, nice sound i think, tough as nails, good on gas.

My dad & I are currently working on an ex-Montana Highway Dept 1947 dumptruck. If i'm not mistaken I think it might be a 1 1/2-ton rating, equipped with a galion dump-body. It has a single-speed rear, split vertically right in the center, we think it might be a Timken unit. We patched together a pretty good 52' V8, runs nice. Originally the engine powered a 52' F3, belonging to one of dads friends. He hit a sinkhole in the dark out on the prairie somewhere, broke the front axle. Us, being the nice guys we are, gave his engine a new home, in our dumptruck. Body still needs some work, looks a little rough still.

well snowking if i got it dug out i could be persuaded to let it go to someone who would use it ........... the digging it out though ....... sheesh my unk has got it buried !!!!!!!!!!!! 50x 80 morton building / ex body shop on some old farm ground , a double wide , and a semi trailer full of computor crap he's bought at state auctions ! and i do mean full !!!!!!!!!! you cant walk in the main building any more ya find a low spot and climb over it .

I too am all about saving anything flathead. I disagree with the keep it until someone gives me what I think it is worth or it can rot mindset however. One it is only worth what someone is willing to give for it, and two I am not into making money on stuff that can be used to help someone, so long as I am not loosing money. I am trying to restore a 1937 john deere D and there are several people around here that have a few in there yards that they are going to "fix up", or they want 5,000 dollors for them or more because they think they are worth that mucSo they will sit there until they rot and are of no use or cannot be fixed because the owner is an *********. But hey that is his right but it does nothing for the people who actually want to fix there projects and get them going again and that really pisses me off, and that of course is my right. But the fact of the matter is a flathead six is fairly plentiful and not worth all that much money as you can always find someone willing to give one away. So if you are not going to loose money on it, why not help someone who will use it and sell it at a reasonable price rather than ratholing it until it locks up, or you break your big toe tripping over it?

I purchased my 51F1 with a 226 Flathead 6 in it 5 years ago. It had been sitting for around 15 years according to the PO, the Flathead was not siezed. The PO told me it was the orginal engine and it had only been rebuilt once back in the early 70's. The valves were all stuck open but I managed to get them freed up and it running, I was able to drive it 40 miles home. My driveway is sloped so I used the engine to move the truck in and out of the garage while working on it. The more it ran during that time the better it ran. I' am still running this incredable Flathead as a daily driver now, and have been for the last 4 years. I picked up a 53 Merc V8 to drop in when the 6 dies but it is still going strong and shows no sign of giving up anytime soon. I beginning to wonder if this engine will out live me. The only thing I have against the 6 is that some of the internal parts are getting real hard to find, Like the oil pump drive gear. The 7HA and OHA models both have a different gear one is 7 tooth and one is 8. I installed an S-10 5 speed and a 9" rearend with 3.23 gears a couple years ago. That S-10 trans is in my opinion perfect for that engine, I'am amazed everytime I drive it of how great it drives now.

I have been thinking of a S10 tranny, how much was it approx to get everything, or even what does a guy all have to get/build/modiefy?
