2002 Ford Excursion 7.3L Oil / Diesel Leak
 

I have a 2002 7.3L Diesel Excursion. It has an oil leak down the back of the engine. It appears to be diesel fuel and not oil. It is leaking out on the passenger side between the engine block and iol pan. It really got the tranny cover all full of oil and thought it was the tranny. But, had the tranny shop look at it and they said No.

Another shop thought it might be the seals between the blower and the blower base unit. Not sure what to think - any thougts?

Welcome to FTE. Start by looking in the valley of the motor (between the valve covers) to see if there is oil there. There's a good chance you have a bad o-ring that needs to be replaced.

If you find oil in the valley, clean it up the best you can and then look for where the oil is coming out. We can tell you which o-ring you need and how to change it when you tell us where the oil is coming from.

In the mean time, keep some extra oil with you, and keep the engine topped off. Low oil can cause hard/no starts and poor performance.

well you going to have to investigate a little
first off, get some Simple Green, spray on the engine hose it of and let it dry
than grab the flashlight and check where the top of the motor gets wet,
most likely itd in the back of the fuelbowl, the drainvalve O-rings are leaking. this is most common problem caused by ULSD. and this will drip out of trans inspection cover and by the starter on the side of the block.
if its oil it might be your turbo pedestal, and oil pump lines o-rings
but since you said fuel than drain valve,

Sounds like the "o" rings on the yellow valve that drains the fuel filter housing, it's a common problem and an easy fix, there is a steel tube attached to the frame on the passenger side that the fuel drains through, it's hard to spot, you'll need a light to find it, if that's where you see fuel on the ground, the "o" rings are the problem. Many of our sponsor's carry a kit with instructions.

Thanks, I will check that. It is leaking pretty good under the car after I turn it off. It will make a little puddle. My oil level has not changed and it should for the amount of fuel/oil that has leaked in the garage and the on the driveway.

Your point about the mess around the trany cover and all over the start is correct. It covers the starter and is on the block.
