won't rev past 3500

Well it was missing in damp weather, so i decided to change wires and replace 180k plugs, think I replaced airfilter but its under doghouse in the van , so i won't run out and check it now. Old plugs center trode was just a nub.
Now when I mash the gas pedal, it revs to 3450 , hits 45mph(3rd gear) and just sits there, kind of like a rev limiter, won't even shift, and the semi just keeps getting closer. Gradual acceleration works fine (80 mph)but semis wait for no van, BLEEP BLEEP
What have I done wrong or need to fix yet

Hate to say this but its a 96 chev van, just nobody intelligent at a chevy forum

Ran fine prior to minor tune up? Will accelerate like normal under light load, revs past 3500 then too? Wont jump when you stomp on it? Is it the 5.7L or the 4.3L

Double check your wire routing and connections, be sure they are not jumping spark to another wire as well. That thing still should have the TBI set up, are you getting any SES lights on?

5.7
replaced wires 1 at time, same location, cross firing (or point bounce on an older car)occured to me also, but how to check it??? If the weather was warmer would think of removing dog house at night and watching. Although I don't think that works except on bad crossfire.

service engine soon NO
actron code scanner reports nothing
but I can read the other readings driving down the road if you have one in mind

Have you changed the fuel filter? Also I have seen the accelerator pedal link which connects to the cable bent that full throttle isn't reached. Takes a pipe wrench to bend it back. Kotzy

Just sounds like a normal Chevy to me..
Hehe i'll go with Kotzy on this i've seen bad filters cause a world of problems.
Also have you checked your EGR system my Ranger was doing the same thing then I tracked it down to a bad EPS sensor and a pinched vac hose on the pvc line.
Just a thought.

I like this guy.. I think we'll keep him. :-missingt

Start with the simple things, if it ran fine before it must be something you touched. Did you move the distributor and accidentially retart the timing?

rustyoldford 01-19-2008 02:40 PM

Fuel filter? gas starved? hmmmm. still getting 12 mpg but will think about filter when it get warmer, its only 10 f in my garage

Bent linkage, actron code scanner shows throttle % 0 - 100, timing ? to 41 degree, might have a egr reading also will have to look
egr vacumm lines?, never would have thought of them
Move the distributor, never,
so far wires and filter sound good to me, I've never done it anyhow
will have to buy one and hope for warm weather to change it. I don't like cold weaher anymore

I would also look into replacing the dist cap and rotor....

I'm with Mike G on this one. Missing in damp weather would have had me suspecting it from the get go. I just can't seem to pin this one down in my mind, One because I'm not sure how that motor is equipped, and two it's just not coming to me. If it were a carbureated vehicle with a vacuum advance distributor, I'd say a vacuum leak or a bad accelerator pump, so how to relate that to whatever set-up you have is the problem. ( Chevy...Van?, Yikes!) Oh, yeah, double check those wires agaisnt a firing order, just to be sure.

rustyoldford 01-25-2008 03:56 AM

well
i'm picking up the filter today, but I'm still gonna hold off till theres a little more heat in michigan before I install it. Its just not bad enough to install in the cold ---- yet!

rustyoldford 03-21-2008 03:16 PM

cought some warmer weather
replaced cap and rotor
test drove no change
gas spits out throttle body injectors at idle (rough idle -like sticky choke), looks ok off idle but who knows at speed under load

Filter refuse to unscrew, wd40 the heck out of it over night, still there
next warm spell (and a near empty tank)- tubing cutter- rubber hose

currently running 2 jars injector cleaner per tankfull, 3 tanks so far, no idle improvement (still loads, stutters, stalls ) up to midrange acceleration improved, even burned a little rubber on the 2 - 1 downshift
but still decellerates on wideopen throttle 3500 rpm max

it's a chevy!

Did you put back the pre-heater for the intake air? If you missed it, it will allow COOOOLd air in to ice up your butterflies... They don't fly to well then. Given that you were futzin around under the hood, you may have displaced the air ducting.

yeppers
runs the same on 50 degree days also

bad96 03-22-2008 10:36 AM

i would say the filter---if it is still rusted on maybe you can get the fuel line off up top and check pressure

durk 04-04-2008 08:03 AM

I had a chevy do this one time when I used autolite plugs. i went back to A/C delco plugs and the problem was solved.
