75 F-100 V8 Tranny slow to "catch"?

Hi Guys.....

Got a 1975 F-100 with a re-built 400 and an automatic (sorry, don't know which one) transmission.

There is no slipping at all. Pulls great. The problem is...When the truck is cold it takes at least 30-45 seconds to go into drive, or to "catch" so to speak. Goes into reverse much quicker. Fluid level seems to be good.

I am hoping this does not mean that the tranny is on her last leg.

Please throw some ideas at me.....

Love this site.

Thanks,

B

not sure on that one, I would say fluid low.......but you checked

Anyone?

I had the same problem after I changed the transmission fluid in a 79 I had. It ended with a rebuild.

so did you figure it out?

What I figured out is that a 30-45 second delay in going into drive is not that bad considering the cost of repair. I suppose I'll let it get worse and hope I don't end up walking home one day. I just can't bring myself to doing a fluid/filter change. Too many people do that and soon after have to do a re-build.

The old girl is just there to make the occasional trip to the dump or haul a motorcycle around....so...WISH ME LUCK!

Thanks for asking.

Good luck - it could last for a long time....

Sounds like the pump may be on its way out. This might be the time to consider pulling it for a rebuild.

Blutox, I know of a good transmission shop in Marietta and Kennesaw. PM me if you want their information.

thread update....2 years later....good news

For all who have "morning sickness" a three speed auto that takes 45 seconds or longer to go "catch" into drive......................I was sweating this (as you can see on this post) 2 years ago. I have driven her about 3000 miles in those two years and the trannie has not changed a bit! Still takes awhile.....but once it catches......no slippage, no issues. If you have this problem...take heart...you could go on for years!!!!!!!
