budget build: $2000 or less
 
any ideas on how i can accomplish a task of around 300 or more horse and 500-600 ft. lbs on a budget of 2000 or less? i am still in school and just trying to build a decent motor for my f250.

any ideas on a 460 build in general are accepted and will be considered,

A good dual plane aluminum intake, 650-750cfm carb, long tube headers, and properly selected cam. A good set of factory iron heads may even push it close to 400hp. $2000 is a reasonable budget for that.

any ideas on an intake? are there any packages for that and would a holley 4160 be a good carb for that? also what kind of torque do u think i should be able to accomplish? torque is what i am goin after

I will follow this post I'm looking at a possible build of my 86 F250 4x4 460, C-6. In know having the heads cleaned up on the exhaust ports will help. decking the block to get your compression where you want it. I will be going to a 9/1 compression ratio so I can run regular unleaded. I'm going with a roller cam. Which will run my build cost up some but I think in the long run it will be worth it plus there is a horsepower gain to be had with rollers, (LESS FRICTION). TriFlow headers will give better torque.
I run NOW an Edelbrock Performer intake with a 600 CFM Holley 4160. I will most likely flow it rather than go with a larger CFM. I like the combination of what I have today. Running a Mallory dist will get a better spark. I run Bosch Platinum +2 spark plugs & really like them. I find they burn cleaner and last a long time.

Since you have a heavier truck, I'd suggest an Edelbrock Performer or Weiand Stealth which are both dual plane intakes. Larger, open plenum intakes may make more power, but at a higher rpm range and may actually make less power in the rpm range you would normally drive, like idle to 3000 rpm.
Since the Holley 4160 is a vacuum secondary, it would be a good choice.
I'd do a search here in the forums or on google, and you can find various build receipes, and dyno tests for the 460. I think you could get 300hp and close to 500 lbsft for a reasonable amount.

In 1971, a stock 460 was rated at 365 hp and 500 lb-ft... Maybe you can build it like the factory used to? That was with D0VE C heads, likely flat tops, and whatever the factory cam was, with factory manifolds... All iron parts! Crazy stuff, huh?

actually the early engines had 22cc dish pistons just like the later models did, but if you HAVE to rebuild it and you already have the late model heads just replace the pistons with flat tops, zero deck the block and just clean up the heads and be slightly above 9:1 comp, take a die grinder and clean up the exhaust ports and do a bowl blend on the intake. stock sized valves on D3VE heads (what yoiu most likely have or an equivilant head with a E5TE casting or some such but almost identical) will support 400-450hp easily enough with only minor port cleanup. use the wieand stealth intake, mild dual pattern cam like a comp xtreme offroad is a good series to work with or equivilant, 670 holley avenger carb is a nice size 650s work just fine for 98% of applications, the triy headers and a good aftermarket timing chain to get the cam timing right and your easily over 300hp without even breaking a sweat.

for a good street motor use an 88 up fi short block , pistons are nearly a flattop with a slight dish, they are cheap and easy to find, if you can't find one of those at least use a quality flattop with the block decked to 0, see if you can find a set of 370 heads, the ports are the same but there is a better quench area that helps with torque production, do a good cleanup in the exhaust port, smooth the intake bowl if you like but don't open it up, the port tapers down at the valve and on a 460 air velocity will really pick up and homogenize the mixture in the cylinder, a performer will bolt right up and makes good power in the lower rpm's, a 650 carb of your choice will make good low end, use a dual pattern cam that favors the exhaust , a crane 272 works good, run the cam 2* advanced, total ign timing will be best at 32-34* with these heads, you can easily build this setup for under 2000$, best of luck!
