Adding an extra fuel tank
 

Anybody seen, heard of, know of, or have an opinion about adding an extra fuel tank to a 2001 F250 SC SB. I'm thinking about removing the spare tire and mechanism to add an extra rear tank like Ford used to do. Even an extra 20 gallon tank would be enough. Planning some long trips this year and would like some extra range while towing our trailer. Adding an extra tank inside the box is a no go. Have a topper and need all the space inside.

I added a TransferFlow Across-the-bed tank to my '02 F-250. With their system, you do not have to worry about switches or valves to change between tanks. Great system. I now have a tool box/fuel tank combo in my F-350 carrying an additional 65 gallons. It is great being able to choose the state I want to refuel in rather than the town/city.

I added a transferflow to our F350 about a year ago.

Love it - I can go across several states w/o filling up. I don't fill up in the "high" fuel tax/price states anymore.

Only one little issue: man when you let both tanks get low = Ouch - Big$$ at fillup. ($240+ just a week ago when I was coming back up from SC - had to put in 80 gal @ about 3.09/gal)

3.09 was cheaper than what I'd seen further south - 3.26 on the Raleigh Durham area.

I added a 34 gal transfer flow to my 99 F-350. I had the first one that was available for a gas rig put on. Gives me a total of 70 Gals. They now have a 50 that they use. I can drive for days and I don't pay for fuel!!!!!!

Looked at that site before. That's a lot of weight for an empty tank.... #187 and it looks like it really hangs down below the frame. I like the clean look under my truck now and don't want anything hanging down that low. Thanks guys for your input, guess I have to keep looking.

I am with flybaby 3 I would like to find a used Excursion tank or old Blazer tank to fit up where the spare tire is now.

Does anyone have any first hand experience with this set up and what is involved to install it and transfere from the back tank to the main tank?

I also have a SB with a cap on and cannot loose the space that a in bed tank would take up.

I met a guy that put one in his F350 and he measured it and it only hung down less than 1/2" lower than factory, but I can't remember if he got the skidplate option or not.

Personally, if you need the bedspace and are travelling long distances, I wouldn't even consider a tank that goes in place of your spare. Extra fuel is nice, but being stuck with a flat? Nope, not worth it in my book, but that's me.

Papa I would be mounting the spare tire up against the passanger inside rail of the bed. The spare tire will take up alot less room in the bed than a auxiliary tank would.

Yeah but the advantage of back East is that you have TONS more breakers out there!! And TREES!!! I'll be moving back to MD/VA in the next few years, I'm sure of it. The mountains are awesome, but it's just too dry and barren out here for me.
