Is there a simple way to know if the fan clutch is operating correctly?

When the fan engages, it is easy to hear. It only engages while towing at highways speeds when there is plenty airflow through the radiator. It literally sounds like a cyclone when it engages, and I can almost feel the engine sucking even more gas just trying to spin the fan that fast.

The radiator and t-stat are new, and I don't have any overheating problems.

I do plan on replacing this truck with a new one this fall, so I don't want to spend too much money fixing something that may not even be broken.

The clutch (when warm) should lock up and draw air through the radiator. When cold, it should be loose and should turn freely (not taking horsepower away from the engine). If you ever find one that is loose when warm - be sure to replace it.

Had an overheat problem with mine and couldn't solve it. Took the 1.5 year old fan clutch back for a lifetime warrenty. The parts man told me it was not bad, and I agree it did not seam bad, but the new one solved the problem, cool again. Bottom line, if the friction on the fan blade when moving it by hand is the same when the engine is cold and when it's hot IT AIN'T WORKING. Oh yea, turn the engine off before you turn the fan blade. Just one of those warnings for the exited quick to act folks.

Hi,

I just replaced the fan clutch on my truck. One of the things I was told to look for was how long it took the fan to stop spinning after killing the engine. My old one would keep spinning for ten to fifteen seconds. The new one stops spinning immediately.

Yes, when it kicks in on the highway it sounds like an airplane taking off :)

For all those folks that are thinking of replacing your clutch fan, be warned!! Only use factory Ford clutches. I have replaced many of these and have had nothing but trouble with aftermarket clutches. After switching to genuine Ford I have had no comebacks. Just a pointer from someone who has done lots of these things.
