The worst smell????

What do you think the worst smell is when you are working on something? I think the oil inside the crankshaft main caps bolt holes when you are tearing down an engine is freakin' stinky!

Definenitly the oil in the mains bolt holes. That stuff is nasty!

I was burning an axel apart the other day on a junk truck and I got some half burned old gear oil on my shirt, Thats the worst thing I can think of.

Does if have to be truck related? If not I'd say working at the packing plant. That is a smell that as long as I live I shall never forget...

Gear or transfer case oil for sure. It is horrible.

JBradley500 01-05-2008 12:57 PM

a burning clutch or torching bushings to get them out....both make me cringe.

I changed the gear oil in my 79's gear box a few months ago, I don't think it has been done since my dad had bought it near 20 years ago, very bad smell.

Old gas is another one once it sits for about 5-10 years it stats to smell.

I think the worst smell for vehicle is gear oil.

At work the worst smell is the yeast. I don't have to mix with it but it sure is foul smelling. Another one is vinegar, I used to work at a grocery store and if that spilled, it lingered through the store.

Power steering fluid, stuff is rancid after 17 years...

texastech_diesel 01-12-2008 09:51 PM

Tractor Hy-Trans from sometime in the 80s. I had to run straight kerosene in the tranny the get the gunk out

Bobby82490 01-13-2008 07:10 AM

Burning clutch/brakes and gear oil.
At work we have this anti-bacteria stuff for the gas storage tanks, that we have to put in when they are empty. That stuff burns my nose a little.

ATC Crazy 01-14-2008 01:26 AM

Gear oil...especially the old stuff.

Propane. I try to stand upwind whenever I fill the Forklift tanks...
