Oil Filter stuck......help!
 

Well it came time for the first oil change...and I started draining the oil and then next to the oil filter. I used several different types of oil filter wrenches....and no luck....then I used my oil filter strap..and crushed the filter in a bit on the side. This thing is on there hard! What can I do to get this fixed? I guess put oil in it and take it to Ford for another oil and filter change....Are the first ones that hard to get off?

Any help is appreciated.

Yeah they suck to get off of there. Just use a big screw driver. Punch the filter and take it off.

yeah run a screw driver through the can, that'll get it off, and dont tighten it so much when you put it on make it tight then another quarter turn should be fine

Yep, it's a well-known trait. They must use ex-NFL nose guards with four foot pipe wrenches or something to put the factory filters on. :( I always have the dealer do the first oil change (sometimes they even do 'em for free :) ), that way HE has to fight with it. Having the vehicle up on their lift makes it quite a bit easier than lying under it on the floor, too, I'd imagine.

I was going to say at least a gorilla or something with an awesome grip. I took it to the dealer ....35 bucks later....all is good! But now I am on the hunt for the wrench that will fit the filter...with all those little ridges. Any clue where to find one?

If memory serves (and, it's becoming more hit/miss by the day :( ) the factory filter (it was that gray thing, right?) isn't the same as the FL820S that your dealer probably installed, so the wrench that fits it won't fit the 820S. Back before I figured it was more cost effective for me to let the dealer change the oil/filter, I used one of those strap-type wrenches that tightened on the filter when you stuck a 3/8" ratchet on it, to take mine off.

Once the factory oil filter has been replaced, any decent filter wrench will do the job. Just remember oil change number one, should always be done by the dealer just to eliminate the agrevation.

Remember a crushed filter that doesn't leak can still get you to the dealer. Once you go the screw driver route, there's no turning back, unless you want to pay for a tow.

Of all the new vehicles I've own, Ford is the only one I've run into this problem on.

............that's the one i have,got it @ auto zone,bought more for the ability to put a scoket extention on it to reach way back there,no room to swing the handle on my SK oil filter wrench.

I had the same trouble with mine on the first oil change. I have no idea what kind of filter was on there, no markings at all - just white. I hammered my oil filter wrench on there that works on 820 oil filters and it came right off, was kinda upset at first Ford did not put a filter on there that was different from a Motorcraft. My best comparison is the one that come on there is like a 6 point socket and the regular ole' FL820 is like a 12 point socket (looking at the ridges on the end).

Well I found the filter wrench for the Ford Motorcraft filter at auto zone....here are the pics. Its a 93mm 36 flutes.

I used a strap wrench from Advance Auto, that worked perfect, mine was crushed from trying to get it off.

Are all of you that change your own oil using the Ford filter? Are their better ones out there?

For a few more cents than the FRAM filter at Walmart....I went with the Ford Motorcraft filter and....I like to see Ford on things anyway. Another plus the filter cup used to change it (93mm 36 flute) is very good....no slipping on this one!

It has been proven time and time again that the Motorcraft filters are some of the best ones out there.

As far as wrenches, I've never needed a wrench to get an oil filter off (aside from the first change of course). When I install an oil filter it only goes snug/hand tight.

What the hell do you use to take them off - your hand?? If you do that I am going to call you sir from here on out.

On a serios note, oil filters are only meant to go on hand tight , but I can get them tight enough with one hand that they require an oil filter wrench after a few heat cycles.

I always put mine on hand tight...(no need to tighten more than that). With that said....I have had some get tight on me and needed a wrench cap to get them off.....(on some of my motorcycles......and my F-250 diesel truck). But I still like to have a proper wrench cap....for those days.

Yeah, I just use my hand. The only filters I haven't been able to get off with my hands are the ones that come on the trucks from the factory
