Screen Cleaning

Where is the fpr screen? keep hearing about how you should clean it.

kawa 12-18-2007 12:50 PM

Pull the top off of the fuel filter, remove filter and there is a hole on the drivers side about 1-2" down as I recall.

It can be cleaned with a Q-tip or you can remove the two (2) 10mm bolts from the FPR and remove the regulator from the filter housing being careful not to lose the O-ring and it can be cleaned that way as well.

Once again....Don't lose the O-ring and the 2 bolts are of different lenghts so take notice.

Pulled the fpr. No screen. I can see a impression from a screen on the fpr. It was there at one time. How bad is it to run without it. It belive that the fule gose into the filter housing from the fpr witch means any crap would just go to the bottom of the housing. And there is a lot of crap down there. If the fule gose from the fpr to the housing wouldnt you be better off without it and let the filter deal with any crud? The screen must be pretty small and will clog faster. Can the black plastic bowl on the fpr be removed for cleaning? Is it pressed on or screwed on?

kawa 12-19-2007 01:02 AM

Any time I cleaned that screen the crud was on the filter side. If crud collects on the screen and if the screen is gone.... then I would imagin that it's headed for the Injectors.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

If it were me I would want the screen for peace of mind. replacing injectors is a lot harder then just one screen.
Here is a link to a guy who was selling them on ebay. If you can't get just the screen, then you have to buy the whole FPR.

How about the plastic bowl?

MADVAN 12-19-2007 07:26 AM

94 and 97 are not the same filter housing.

Flea

A no screen will not hurt inj's. Fuel goes thew the screen on its way back to the tank. Its only reason is for removing air from the system. The screen keeps the restrictor clear.

scatgo

Your filter house is older style with screen that hangs off the side. You cannot just buy the black cover for the screen.

I looked at a diagram of the fule system in the ford manual and it shows the fule return lines from the injectors going to the FPR. Since the fule is filtered before it goses to the injectors it will be filterd before it gets to the FPR. If there is any crud on the screen on the filter side it might be crud thats floating around in the filter housing. I would still like to get a screen so any help on that would be appreciated. Iam still trying to find out how to remove the plastic bowl that hangs under the FPR. Dose any one have a spare screen they are willing to part with?

Thanks

Its a Bowl (black part). Your truck does not have it. Your has a pipe. Bottom of can to bottom of regulator. It goes in below the vac switch. There is type of screen inside. More like steel wool. Never needs cleaning.
