302 Starter hook up in my Ranger

Ok guys,

Here I am in the final steps of the 302 swap and here's yet another issue. The 302 is from an 88 F150 EFI (converted to carb)
Allright the starter on my ranger had 3 hookups, one 12 guage from the solonoid, on 4 gauge positive from the battery, and one negative.
The starter on the 302 has 1 place to hook up on the starter, why? I'm thinking it's a positive hook up, but I hook it up from where, and what guage? Logic tells me, I should use the wire from the solonoid(at the fender) but a 12 guage alone seems small for a starter. What about a ground? shouldn't I ground the starter, if so where? There's only the one hook up, unless I just hook up a ground on one of the mounting bolts, would that be a good idea?

I need your help guys.

Thanx,

Madmike33

You should get a solenoid (the "relay" on the fenderwell) from whatever vehicle the 302 came out of.

Then run a large-gauge wire from the solenoid to the starter.

The original starter has a solenoid ON the starter. The 302 starter does not. You need a heavy-duty solenoid for the fenderwell, run a heavy gauge wire from the battery to the solenoid, and then from the solenoid to the starter, and everything should be fine.

Exactly. Go to any autopart store and ask for a fender mounted starter solenoid. If they are too dumb to know what that is, say a starter solenoid for an 88 Ranger. You will need to run the small wire, (red with blue stripe) to the solenoiod. Then you will need a battery cable to go from positive to the solenoid, then one from the solenoid to the starter. Your ground needs to go to both the frame and the engine.

Thanx guys, sounds good. I still have the truck the 302 came out of its up north but only about 1 hours drive. I knew I should have grabbed that when I was tearing into it.

Thanx again guys.
