Erratic Wast Gate behaviour at Speed

It's been pretty cold up here this past week... I noticed yesterday that the waste gate was opening while at highway speed (could hear it hissing) and then closing when I would hit the gas peddle a bit more. Pressure gauge shows it going from 5 psi (@55 mph) to 0psi when the gate opens.

This morning when I started it up to let is warm up I noticed (by sound) that the wate gate was opening and closing, multiple times over a couple of min, very sporadically.

I'll pull the codes to see if anything is flagged later tonight. Is this a solenoid issue, exhaust back pressure problem etc?

Comments and suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks,

that would be your EBPV (exhaust back pressure valeve) it helps warm the truck faster by holding back pressure..it is normal for it to close and hiss..it does stop after the temps come up right??? but the valve should stay closed till you touch the brake or temps are up...the EBPS tube may need to be cleaned..here is a good write up on cleaning the tube...

What Ron said^^^^^^^^.

Welcome to winter

Is there a mod to disable the wastegate? Would this also solve the issue?

Noticed that my fuel mileage had come down over the past couple of months... not a winter fuel issue. - Suspected the EBPV or an injector or two...

130K on the truck, this is the first real problem. No complaints thus far.

Thanks for the comments.

Wastegate & EBPV are two totally different things. The WG is to keep the turbo from overboosting, the EBPV is for warming up the engine. You can disable either or both of them. I disabled my WG by pulling the rid line off and plugging it. I get better performance that way.

My EBPV is still in place until I decide to pull my turbo. Then I'll drop the EBPV delete pedestal in place and gut the EBPV.

Did you plug the line or the port on the housing?

thanks,

I plugged the line by sticking it on one of the boot clamps on the hot-side I/C tube. I didn't cover the actuator, but I probably should just to keep any junk from getting in there.

EDIT: Keep an eye (or an ear) on your turbo if you do this. When I did it, I noticed a nice boost in performance, but it surged pretty badly. I since installed the Wicked Wheel and I hear no more surge (just a "wicked" cool whistle!)

for the west gate.plug the line using the stud sticking out of your IC boot clamp..doing this will make the turbo spool faster as well as build 30 lb of boost..keep in mind..any thing over 25 lb is hard on the turbo.. in the pic below is the turbo pedestal..just above the blue dot is the EBPV..un plug it by flipping back a wire lock and pull the plug out..doing this makes the west gate stay open and will set the SES light..id check the tube for cleaning though....
where in NH are you??

Split my time between Stratford and Atkinson.

@130K miles I'm due for a new EBPS, will order one this week.

Thanks for the help.
