Engine Code: Engine Lean Bank 1
 

I am guessing my newly oiled Volant filter is throwing this code.. this code popped up last week, first time since I re oiled my filter and I cleaned the MAF sensor and reset the code. Today, after about 200 miles, the same code popped up. what should I do? Is it my filter? Should I reclean and reoil (with less oil obviously)?


I want to mention that this was not my first time cleaning and reoiling a reusable filter. I know not to over oil these filters as it can be detremental...

Over oiling usually results in contamination of the MAF sensor which can be cleaned with non-residue electronic or contact cleaner. If you are throwing lean codes repeatedly I would try going back to the stock intake for a while and see how it does. First, clean the MAF sensor and then go from there.

I just cleaned the MAF sensor and also recleaned and slightly reoiled the filter. Im waiting to dry and I'll put it back in. Fingers crossed, hopefully it wont come back on!

I was throwing these 2 codes with my MAC Air intake kit too. I recently found out that the 04-05 F-150's computers can't handle the increase of air into the intake and compensate for it. So, I have ordered a Edge programmer to fix it. The shop that I went to adivsed me on buying a Superchip programmer, but they are way too expensive for me. I ran my stock intake without any problems for 50,000 miles until I just added the intake kit from MAC. Hope this helps you out.

The EDGE only allows you to change the fuel at WOT. It does not change the MAF transfer function to allow the PCM to compensate for aftermarket intakes. You will have to get custom tuning done to fix that.

I had those same two codes come up on my 1999 F-350. I tried everything that was recommended: Cleaned MAF sensor, replaced sensor, egr valve, removed the K & N filter and did other things. Nothing seened to work until I had it looked at by a local shop. Turns out the fuel filter needed changing. Must have picked up some bad gas. Has not been on since, over 35,000 miles.

ok so I was driving home today, after about 100 miles after the re-cleaning, I threw off the "Too Lean Engine Bank 1" and also "Too Lean Engine Bank 2". I initially put the Volant intake in around 8,000 miles. I now have 25,000 and now I am throwing codes...I have cleaned the filter at 20,000 and drove 5,000 without any problems or codes..Now after my second cleaning at 5,000 miles, I am experiencing these problems. I just erased the codes using the Edge programmer...

I did change the fuel filter at 20,000 miles... How many times did you have to clear the codes? Tonight was my third time already....SIGH


Could it be a PCM problem? Should I reflash the PCM and overwrite it with the same settings? I been using octane 87 for over a year...no problems....perhaps I have gotten some bad gas? Should I up the octane....I am so frustrated..

You may simply have a vacuum leak, the most common reason for these fault codes.

Check for a vacuum leak. Maybe you knocked a vacuum line loose when you removed/reinstalled the filter and now it looks like the filter is causing the problem.

Association does not prove causation.
You started getting the codes right after oiling the filter, but that does not mean oiling the filter is the cause.

I'll check the vacuum hose on the intake.

I cleared it everytime I did something new. Even just for the heck of it to see if it would just go away. I did have vacuum leaks. Fixed them. When I replaced the MAF sensor it stayed off the longest. Still came on though. I was going nuts. The cost of another fuel filter isn't that much compared to a new MAF sensor or a new toupee after pulling out all your hair

(my truck is being used by my father at the moment since it's snowing-loves my Ford) As soon as I get a chance, I'll check for the vacuum leak.


As I recall, there is only one vacuum line attached on the intake?

the vacuum hose was off...I remember now, when I received the Volant intake, the vacuum hose was cut too short. I called the manufacturer and complained and their response was that its human error and that they are not always cut exactly the same size. Its half way on the nipple on both ends of the hose. Hence coming off. Now I zip tied both ends and it should not come loose.
