It should be a 223 cubic inch six.As far as rebuild parts I have no idea, should not be much of a problem though.

The 223 didn't come in trucks until '54 so it should be a flathead 6. I don't know much about them unfortunately, but you can try Mac's Antique autoparts for a rebuild kit. http://www.macsautoparts.com I don't have my catalog handy, but if I remember right they have the kit. If it's a 223 ohv your in luck, AutoZone carries the gasket kit and bearing sets.

The '53 should have the 215 ( used in '52 and '53 only ). The distributor is in the center of the block, oil filter to the rear on the 215, the 223 has the distributor and oil filter toward the front.

David, is this an overhead valve engine or a flathead engine? Overhead has the spark plugs on the side of the engine and a cover on top of the engine. A flathead has the spark plugs on the top of the engine.

Ok, you have the overhead valve six, the 223 CI engine was used in cars starting in 1952. It was the only engine with overhead valves that Ford produced then.

In '52 & '53 U.S. Ford cars and trucks had a 215 c.i.d. six. It was replaced in '54 by the 223 which is just a slight evolutionary change in the basic design ( mostly to do with fitting the '54 car chassis ). Both these engines look virtually identical on the driver's side, but the main difference is on the passenger side, where the fuel pump and distributor locations are reversed on the two. The 223 was designed with a front sump for the chassis change in the '54 passenger ( '53 and '54 passenger cars look almost identical on the outside but the front chassis is completely different ) so the distributor is toward the front. There is a .060 difference in the bore size of the two ( 3.56 for the 215 vs. 3.62 on the 223 ), but the stroke is the same ( 3.60 ).
