worked the crap out of my flathead this weekend

I hauled a 1968 john deere 4020 about 35 miles this weekend. I had to use the two speed rear for this one but it ran 50mph and ran between 180 and 200 degrees the whole trip and it was hot this weekend. all in all pulling 16,000 lbs with a 100hp motor ain't to bad.

Now there's a story I like to hear. pretty good for a motor so small at 239 CID. An idea on mpg?

and people scoff at the idea of a flathead

unloaded she gets about 10mpg, loaded if I had to guess I would say 5mpg maybe 8. I did just pick up a spicer 5831 aux. trans with a .74 OD so my unloaded figures I am hoping will jump to around 15mpg. I've got a good pic of me pulling a 3020 ,which is one size smaller than a 4020, in my gallery.

thats an awesome pic

I think your truck would look more awesome with another rear axle if you are keeping it box less,
You got the twin to mine almost there, mines a Mercury though.

Great truck! Good to see it still in service.

F6Guy 10-06-2007 04:32 PM

Thanks for the kind words. I am hoping to paint it next year, but then I was supposed to paint it this year. Now that I am driving it I don't want to take it appart again. I addmit it would look great with a twin rear axle set up but that is just to many tires for me to keep up with.

Seeing you work yours like that makes me wanna get mine roadworthy asap. It'll be awhile though. Are you gonna keep your other Aux. trans.? I'm like you I'm tore between doing bodywork on mine, or just getting it in driveable condition. Good Luck JOE

I just got it, so I have not installed it yet but yes I do plane on keeping it. Just hang in there and be steady at it as time and money allow and you will get there. I had my truck for 8 years before I could drive it, and if I can help in any way let me know.

joes52f6 10-07-2007 08:30 PM

I'm just ready to get mine on the road, but be fully safe. I'm sorry I thought you had 2 different aux. trans. I got all my fluids changed and I'm gonna start my brake work over the winter. I have twin boys on the way so I'll be a little busy but hopefully get some progress on her. How hard is it backing that trailer up with manual steering? When i move my truck around it almost feels like it has power steering. I've got used to it though from my '89 toyota. Thanks for offering to help, and good luck. JOE

It isnt hard at all to turn. the toughest part is that the truck iiself is so long I have to start turning alot sooner than I need to. If I find another trans I will let you know.
