Tune-up specs for 352 needed

Help!
I need info for a tune-up on a 352 w/4spd or my '66 F250.
Plug gap, timing, point gap, etc...

Can you help?!
Thanks,
Dave

Spark Plug gap: .034
Point Gap: .017
Dwell: 26-31
Timing: 6BTDC

I would personally set the initial to at least 10 degrees BTDC. 12 may even be better.

Hi Dave and welcome to the site!

Here's some specs. on your truck. I'm assuming you don't have thermactor (air pump).

Plug Gap: .032"-.036"
Point Gap: .017"
Point Dwell: 26*-31*
Initial Timing: 4* BTDC
Idle Speed: 550-575 RPM

Hey Rat you beat me to it.

Where did you get the initial timing spec? My 1966 Ford Service Specifications pub. says 6* in one place and 4* in another.

I got mine from the 65 - 86 chiltons manual. The 6 is with exhaust emmision and the 4 would be without I guess. The without isn't in the book. And welcome to FTE from me too dfox! Didn't see that you were new.

Hmmm... Here's what the spec. books says:

Non Thermactor
Auto - 6*
Manual - 4* (engine section) or 6* (ignition section)

Thermactor
Auto - TDC
Manual - TDC (yuk!)

I gonna go out in the garage and check out some other manuals.

Hey Dave, while I'm being anal go ahead and set your timing to 10* and go from there, it will like it.

Man Barry I can't imagine how they used to run at 0 degrees. Keep in mind my 360 was one sick puppy but there was a world of difference between 6 and 12 degrees.

Well my other manuals say 6* so I did a little more checking. In the ’66 spec. book where the discrepancy exists, there is also a note at the bottom of the engine spec. section that says all manual and automatic V8 engines have the same timing. (Interesting to note that the six cylinder engines do have less timing than the autos). So I looked at the ’65 and the ’67 spec. books and it is 6* regardless of auto or manual. They also have the same note about all V8’s having the same timing regardless of what trans. So Sean you are right, I think it is a typo in the ignition section of the ’65 book, will amend it. Thanks!

Barry
