Gear Shift Removal

I have a 69 F100 4X4 with a 4 speed manual and need to remove my gear shift. Is it a big job? Thanks for your help.

Are you talking about just the handle on the tranny?
The only creeper tranny I had(it was an IH pickup), the handle came off after you unscrewed the "cap" that held it on. Using large channel locks, unscrew it, then the handle just slipped up/out.

Not sure if they had other variations where it unbolted. Either way I can't see it be difficult. Usually the best is to make sure it's in neutral before pulling handle out.

Mine you push the cap down and turn and it will pop up with a spring. Then the shifter will just pull up and out. Make sure that you have it in nuetral when you do it.

4 speed shift lever retainers

Warner 4 speed transmissions: The cap is threaded = 8MTH-7220.

New Process transmission: The cap has two cutouts, which is held to the shift tower with two internal pins. Push down slightly, rotate 1/4 turn. = B8T-7220-D

Both these parts are available from Ford. The Warner type lasts for years, the New Process type fails on a regular basis.

Yes, I forgot to say mine is a NP.

Thanks guys - putting an A/C unit in my Ford and it will be a lot easier if I do not have to fight getting the correct angle on the dangle or bending my Old Fat Body around that Gear Shift when trying to get everything to fit! Thought if I was only going to get 8 mpg I may as well be cool while doing it.
