highest mileage on 4.2 ??

1997 F150 Longbed w/ a homemade cold air intake and just changed the sparkplugs (still had the stock ones) @ 178,000 Miles. As far as I know nothing major has been done to it. I think the belts were changed and other maintenance related stuff but so far so good. I'm planning on doing seal replacements and exhaust replacements within the next year as well if that matters.

I know nobody's been on this in awhile but my brother's 99 f150 4.2 5 speed is about to hit 200,000. Thing runs great. The biggest repair he did to it was he wore out the leaf springs on it from haulin so much weight for his construction business. We put some f250springs on it and they work great. He had a rough idle problem just the other day and i asked him when the last time he changed his fuel filter was and he said NEVER! Replaced it now it idles fine. Its been one heck of a truck.

Holy crap, blast from the past. 5 years ago, hehe. I completely forgot I was even on here. Truck eventually had a rod bearing go out and I still managed to sell it for 1500 bucks. Got a 95 Mitsubishi 3000gt and a 97 Subaru Legacy L since then. :)

I have a 2002 with 51k on it. I bought in 14 months ago with 36k on it. Just had the upper intake gastkets replaced and the clutch and rear seal. Looks like who ever had it last couldnt drive a stick. Now it is running awesome. Rolling on 22's. I will keep you updated as the miles click away.

Just picked up my 4.6l f150 for dirt cheap ... but I guess that's because it has 254,000 on it, and still running strong. Just a minor oil leak. It was a well maintained fleet truck for an oil company.

jbafile 05-07-2008 04:42 PM

i have 111k on mine.

Just pulled a hydro-locked 4.2 for a customer at 238,000. Still ran clean and no smoke even with the rod knock.

Highest Mlieage 4.2L

I drive a delivery route of around 220 miles a day. I use a 1998 E150 4.2L V6,E40D Auto. When purchased the van had 351,000 miles on it. The past history is unknown. The motor was totally destroyed. I purchased a used motor out of a 2000 F150 with 31,000. Other than a transmission rebuild 75,000 miles ago I have only done regular maintenance. The van now has 546,700 miles on it. I use Mobil 1 High Performance 15,000 mile oil and the Mobil 1 15,000 mile oil filter. It has never used a drop of oil and religiously gets 14.5-15.5 MPG with carrying a heavy load dailly.I also drive a 1998 E250 4,2L which has some issues. (See post by E150 in 3.8,4.2 Forum)

Got a 1999 E-150 with 199,102 miles on it, replaced the orginial alt 4 years ago, the fan belt 2 years ago and one valve spring last year. It was and still running a little rough, and I have done the egr, maf, 02 sensors the usual stuff.........everything else is original. I change the oil every 3 to 4 thousand and it gets serviced trans, read end etc etc. I don't beat it and it looks good for a "99", not a mark on the body, never in a accident.

Well, nothing super amazing but my '99 4.2L is up to about 130,000 miles now. I think it was self inflicted but the only real issue with it so far was a leaking (externally) timing cover. Got that fixed, now I got a leaking freeze plug. Other minor issue was an idler pulley making noise. Done routine maintanence, new ford plugs & wires around 90k I think it was, thats about it. Clutch is making a noise now, someone here said it was the throwout bearing, will probably have to have the clutch done for the first time. Never was to thrilled about the mpg, probably mid 14's mixed, winter it drops to around 13 or sometimes less . But its been a great truck, and most importantly never has left me stuck out in a field, even though its not even limited slip, the thing does far better off road than my buddies SD does with LS!

Currently at 134,000 miles on my 2005.
Aside from front brake rotors about 100,000 miles ago, and a leaking rear axel seal (fixed in driveway), I have not had any problem.

BlueOvalFitter 05-15-2008 04:23 PM

Mine is still pinging like a woodpecker on sheet metal! :-X15
An engineer from Ford will be in town next Friday,5-23-08,at my local Ford dealer to check out my pinging problem!

Socal20 05-22-2008 10:44 PM

Just over 120k on my 2000 f-150. gets right about 15mpg highway. tranny just went on it though, $2700. other than that, no major mechanical problems......

uh, well, my engine pings/knocks like hell under load. bent rod? stuffed lifter? how much longer you guys think MY engine will last?

Warrio 07-14-2008 07:09 AM

I have a '98 Ext Cab with 181K and it hasn't given me a problem yet...I put Valvoline MaxLife 5W30 with a quart of Lucas Oil Stabilizer every 5K miles (with Lucas you can do this) and keep the tranny and rear end oil changed every 30k. I also use Lucas injector cleaner with upper cylinder lubricant at every oil change. The only other thing I did was a K&N filter charger. I plan on keeping it a long time so we will see how many miles I can get out of it...

T K 07-16-2008 11:54 AM

I have a fleet of 60 4.2s ranging from 2001-2008 the older trucks have between 175,000to 225,000 miles with no tear downs.
