i have a buddy who has a 97 F150 4x4 reg cab. this truck has just turned 250k w/no major engine trouble since he has had it(he bought at 204k) he owns a lawnservice and has worked this truck extremely hard. put a snowplow on it last winter. so it has plowed snow for 2 winters and pulled his lawn equipment trailer for 3yrs. he has hauled mulch that was probably loaded 1000 lbs over the trucks GVW without a hitch.
so far the only thing he has had to replace were all the tierods.

i am a dodge guy at heart but this truck was definetly "built ford tough". i would have no problem using this thing anytime for anything.

just one good damn truck.

I have a 1997 f150 xlt 4.2. It has 147,000 miles on it. Sometimes in the mornings on a cold morning it ticks and then when warmed up it stops. I live in Texas and we have very few cold mornings. She runs like a champ still! Theres no use in worring about these trucks, the way i look at it, if it's gonna break worring wont help it. Dont fix something that's not broke. Just my 2 cent's. I also have a 1986 f150 truck and it has 309,879 on it, it's got a small light knock at the bottom of the motor that started over 100,000 miles ago, it still runs like a champ.

ok so ya'll seem to talk about the oil changes a lot in here. my factory book says use 5w20 every 5000 miles. this seemed a little much for me but i followed it anyway. ive now got over 44k on my 01 4.2L and it does great. i do live in texas though and most of my miles are on these great and oh so long highways. could someone gimme the heads up on the type of oil and frequency of change? thanks a bunch.

Welcome to FTE!
Check the Oil and Lube forum. You find out more than you ever wanted to know about oil - there are some pretty good discussions and pretty smart guys.
Seems the general opinion is Ford says 5w20 so they get the CAFE benefit. Nothing wrong with using 5w20, but I'm guessing you don't have to.
I'm at 91,000 miles (2000 model), I've always used 10W30.
5,000 mile intervals is fine (it's what I use).

bought mine new in 99, and with the exception of a warranteed fuel pump, it has always started and run well. i have 88xxx on it now and am getting increasingly better milage (21 mpg now), and it seems strong yet (i think good and broke in now). a little lifter noise at startup, but i'm not complaining about the engine one bit. try to change oil every 4-5000, have been running valvoline duralube (5w-30 winter, 10w-30 summer, Minnesota cold!) since 20k. it's a strong enough motor for pulling (3.55's help), but the REST of the drivetrain leaves much to be desired!

Bought my 98 F150 SC 4.2L 2WD 5-SP new in August of 1998. Not the highest mileage but my truck now has 73,000 miles. I have kept track of gas mileage since new and have averaged 19.7 mpg. I have had zero problems with this engine, in fact my first major service for the truck other than regular oil changes, was lower ball joints and disc brake pads done last week. My first real problem is a vibration when applying the brakes which I've been told is probably the rear brakes.
The 4.2L is perfect for my use; plenty of power and great gas mileage for a full size truck.

Well i have 92000 on my 1998 E150 4.2 . Had an alternator go bad , power steering pump, and carbon buildup in the upper intake egr ports that caused a shudder under hard acceleration, and brake rotors replaced. So knock on wood its still kicking.

My 97 F150 is just getting ready to roll over 188,000 miles. No real problems as of yet but the tranny has a shudder in it so will run it until it lets go. Getting ready to replace the exhaust because of it running rough. The cats are bad so replacing it all the way back. Pretty good truck so far.
