v10 engine problem

I have a 1999 F250 4x4 XLT reg cab v10. I bought it new in Jan '99. It now has 19k miles. I have made no changes to the truck other than a leveling kit for the suspension. I have had no major problems, but I get a unsmooth idle at times. This seems to happen only briefly. (like slightly skipping a beat, not a hard miss) Has anyone else had this problem or know what it could be. It doesn't seem to affect overall performance, but I don't like the fludder. Time has lapsed and warranty is out.

Do you have an EGR system? If so, it may be causing the truck to starve for fuel in an effort to lower emissions. Also, there is a history of the Idle Air Control (IAC) valve failing on V10s. Maybe yours is almost bad? Weak or dirty injectors... so many causes! :-rip

I had a '93 F150 that did as you describe. It would almost die at idle sometimes though. Anyway, I took it in to get it "fixed". Whatever they did to alter the idle made the truck lose some overall power. Looking back, I wish I'd just left it alone.

Oh hi,

With out any knowledge on this engine (yet), if it has a throttle position sensor it could be bad. I had this problem on an Explorer. It was a simple replacement.

Mine does it too. Not real noticeable unless I'm trying to listen to it. I'm gonna have the dealer look at that, as well as a list of things I have, come Monday. I'll be happy to post his answer.

My father's 98 Club Wagon with the V10 does the same thing after idling for about 20 minutes. It is a slight vibration and sound change. It corrects itself in about 10 seconds. Reving the engine up also corrects it. Benjamin

Could what's being described be the infamous 'flutter' exhaust problem that some of these V10's have?

"Flutter" occurs under acceleration, not at idle, and manifests itself as a noise, not a change in performance of the engine.:-(
