y-block plug wires to use?
 

Is there a engine that corresponds to the same length as the 272 y-block for replacement wires? I want a nice set but am considering colored wires. I am not sure yet if I am going to run them around the back with the original separators and looms. Will wires work from a 460? thanks. Bill

When I'm re-doing the plug wires, I'll buy a set that is at least long enough, then shorten the extra-long wires to fit.

I would also suggest using the exact original, factory wiring harness. It's tidy, it keeps the wires out of the way, and keeps them off of the exhaust manifolds. The y-block plug heat shields work with the original plug wire lay-outs.

And I make sure that I don't have wires that are sequential in the firing order next to each other in the wiring loom. Adjacent wires can cause a mysterious misfire that's hard to diagnose.

You best bet would be a cut to fit set. Maybe contact these folks about a set. I don't see any listed for a Y-block, but they may have something available. I have a set on a 351W and they are really nice. http://www.performancedistributors.com/livewire.htm

My set of Ford-licensed repros just arrived from Dennis Carpenter. It was about $70 for the set. The diagram that came with them indicates the length of each wire. If you go with cut-to-fit, I can give you the original lengths.

I used an Accel 8mm universal wire kit. Cut them to fit. PCMenten is right about the original wire keepers and such.

Bill I hate to say this but wires from a 70 (chevy) pickup with a small block
fit OK .:( This is the setup with the manifolds are above the plugs center dumps .
My old plug wire catalog lists Y Blocks and small block scrubs take the same wire set. :-missingt

I think I chucked the sheet out ... it laid on the shop floor and got kicked around quite a bit. I'll take a look though.

thanks HOTWRENCH---I had an idea and I will take the accel wires off the Stude Avanti 289 stude engine and swap with the 272. I think it will work. If not small block c____y wires it is!!!!!! Bill

You didn't ask...but 289/302 plug wire sets work great on 1949/53 flatty's.

Well I found a guy in Bedford Texas that makes up a numbered set Ive been installing them for the last week, am Arthritus is kicking in. Its hard if not difficult with my 312 engine installed in my 1955 F-100 ran into a couple other issues, doing this. The number 5 wire is just a little short, the routing thru the looms get some what confusing several posts on this subject several different sites have posted the locations of these looms. all with a different routing suggestions. This have several post on the subject also So you chose the best one, I am in the middle of that. I may have miss installed some of these numbered wires, how in the world did I do that. Well it’s easy to do with the way you have to climb around to get this to work. Best way in my opinion is do this with the engine out of the truck that’s the key to this wire installation in hoping you get the firing order right!AJ
