Need engine ID help.
 
I grew up with Chevys and not too familiar with Fords, so don't flame me too bad. Here is the story........ I bought a 85 Bronco that had the bolwn 302 swapped out for a 95 302, or so I was told. The body was rotten so I pulled the motor to put in my Jeep. After cleaning it up I could tell it did'nt look like a 302. After trying the decoders it looks like a have a 74 3541W or a 71-79 400.

Here are the numbers.

Engine casting: D4AE-8015-AA-14
7811


Intake: E4TE-9425-BB


Heads: I assume the #'s are under the valve covers. I just put on gaskets (for a 95 302) and don't really want to pull them off, but I will if needed.

count the number of valve cover bolts: 8 is a 351M/400..... 6 is a 302/351W. under the valve cover should be a date code, for example 4A6 (1974 January 6th)

The 8015 must actually be 6015, as that's the basic block casting number. Therefore, inputting D4AE-6015-AA, Google search produces...

Ford D4AE 6015 AA 351W

From "Boucher's Racing Engines".

The intake manifold number indicates 1984, probably someone swapped this intake onto the older (1974+) engine, since the casting number indicates that it's a 4V.

The 8th digit in the VIN is the engine code. 1985 Bronco: F = 302 2V / N = 302 EFI / G = 351W

1970/79: Windsors only used in passenger cars and 1975/79 Econolines.

First 351W in F Series truck or Bronco = 1980.

351M/400 used in passenger cars through 1979. No further use of these engines after that year in cars.

351M/400 used in F Series trucks = 1977/82; in Bronco's = 1978/82; in Econolines = 1980/82. 1982 was the last year these engines were used...in anything.

351C/351M/400 = 8 valve cover bolts / 302/351W = 6 valve cover bolts.

looks like you have a 74 351W with an 84 intake.

If you want the actual birth date of the block, look for the date code next to the casting numbers. This is a number/letter/number(s) combo. First number is the year of the decade it was cast (D=1970) the letter is the month, starting with "A" for January thru "M" for December, they skipped the letter "I". The last number or numbers is the day of the month it was cast. I agree with the others, it's not a 351M/400.

Thanks for the replies. 6 bolts on the valve covers. 351W it is.

Now next question. How good are these engines? HP? Low end torq? Durability? I've heard in the past that the Windsor is junk. I want to put it in my Jeep. Mostly off road and city. Very little highway. Good choice?

Edit: Also, what would be a good choice for a carb. It had a Holley 750 on it that was waaaaay to much. I want one that will run at steep angles off road. Motorcraft?

it's a very good motor, just needs heads....ford kept the 302 heads instead of building new ones for the exrta cubes.

the carb is ok if you put heads on it or port the ones you have.....I would run a 600 edelbrock if you leave it stock.......

Let me guess.. it was a Chev guy that told you that... :rolleyes: The engine is very durable and will make comparable HP and TQ to any other small block motor if properly equipped. The heads are somewhat restrictive but respond to porting and valve work, and the motor will need more cam than the competetion.. due to small port heads. the upside of the smaller ports is better than average low rpm TQ. Of course you can fix all that by straping on a better set of heads. The rotating assembly is good for 400+HP.

Yeah.. 750 is way too much, 500-650cfm depending upon the cam.

Hi Bill, I'm hoping you can help me with some info on the E4TE-9425-BB manifold. What is the exhaust crossover control valve called and what is the part number? I got one for my 351w and the valve is good but if I need a replacement it has no part number on it. Finding any solid info has also proved difficult. I live at 9K in Colorado so this could be a good feature come winter. Thank you for so willingly sharing your vast knowledge and experience with us Ford Freaks!

I actually found the part number from the local dealer parts department. After laughing about the obsolete part he told me it is called a intake manifold heat control assembly and is part number E4TZ-9G464A. Google search netted some NOS dealers that have them. Hope this helps others that have this question. I will connect it to a PVS6 from Standard Motor Products inb the thermostat housing so it will close the crossover at 90 degrees or so. FTE rocks!
