HIGH OIL CONSUMPTION IN 1997 4.6 F150.

A friend has a 1997 4.6 f150 with 25k miles and
it is using more than 2 quarts per 1000 miles.
His Ford dealer isnt impressed and doesnt seem
to want to do anything about it. Is there anyone
else out there with the same trouble with a
low mileage 4.6?? If so--what has been their experiences with their Ford dealer ?? What is
the best way to handle the dealer to get them to
correct this problem??

Bottom line, if it's under warranty (36,000 Mile FACTORY warranty) the dealer MUST repair it. End of story. If need be, contact Ford's customer service department, and work with them. Hope it all works out.

I too am getting the same story from Ford. I have a 99 F150 w/4.6L and 17,000 miles. I noticed the low oil after I changed the oil at 15,000 miles. The Ford Dealer is saying they can run a oil consumption test but that rarely results in any action being taken. Ford is saying 1 quart in 750-1000 miles is NORMAL!!!!! That is simply absurd. I have an old Nissan with 170,000 miles on it that does not burn a drop of oil. I want to get this fixed before I am stuck with an old oil burner instead of a new one. Let me know if you get anywhere with your friend's truck.

Is there any oil leaks? 99' 4.6L and 5.4L have problems with leaking headgaskets from the right rear of the engine or the left front of the engine haven't heard to much about them burning oil. If your truck is under warranty the dealer must fix it absolutely no questions asked!!

I have a 97 F150 with a 4.6L. I have 42K miles on it and to this day no leaks and no consumption.

But if yours is using 2 quarts let alone 1 quart and it's under warranty I would make Ford do something about it.

LAST EDITED ON 10-Oct-00 AT 07:54 PM (EST)[p]Get your dealer to start an oil consumption test. I had the same problem. Took the truck in for an oil change and was told that the oil was low. Started checking it more frequently and noticed it was burning more and more oil the more miles it got. It only had about 23,000 when I noticed it. The dealer started recording the consumption and by 27,000 I got a new engine. Good Luck!
