got a title problem
 

hey guys i got a problem getting the title for my 64 f-100.
The lady at the DMV says that the vin that I took isn't the correct. So I'm in search of the one on the frame without any luck i might add.

But my question is has anyone ever filed for a bonded title. The guy I bought the truck from has moved and i just have a bill of sale.
We had the police run the VIN number and it come back as not stolen yadda yadda yadda.
but what I dont understand is how could the police run the VIN and the DMV lady say its not the VIN doesn't make any since.

So has anyone ever got a bonded title and what was the process.

I know the vin on my 66 is quite a bit shorter than modern VIN #'s.

When i got the antique tags for mine, it was quite the ordeal.. Believe it or not, DMV employees aren't all-knowing. :)

Is the vin on your door tag?

mine is this: F10YL810805 , which a guy over in the 61 - 66 forum broke down as the following:

F10= F100 2wd
Y= 352 2V CID
L= Michigan truck plant
810805= 1966

I too have a 64 F100, the VIN is: F10CL543379. What is the problem with your vin? I too had problems with the revenue office wanting to argue that all Ford VINs stared with F, I had to take a pic of the VIN plate on my 78 LN8000 service truck to prove that it actually starts with a U, which was Fords designation for utility at the time. The early Bronco VIN also starts with a U.

On the bonded title question. Yes, I have done it, I just hope you are not in a hurry(I think it took between 3-4 months to jump through all the hoops). First you need to go to the revenue office and pick up a application for bonded title, next fill it out and send back (it will ask for a brief description of how you got the vehicle and for 2 apprasials). They will research the VIN to verify no leins or not stolen. Next they will send you a letter stating the exact amount of title bond that must be purchased (they cost very little, I think mine was $50 for a $3500 truck). Take this along with all "normal" papers(bill of sale, insurance, county appraisal) to the revenue office and they will issue your tags and a "bonded title" If there is no issue of ownership for 3 years, then they will send you your bond papers back and the truck is yours free and clear. Unless thing have changed in the last 10 years since I last did one, this is the basic steps. (or unless my memory has deteriorated even more)

The pompous, pinheaded DMV clerks (regardless of the state) have seen 17 digit Ford car and truck VIN's since 1980 on cars, 1981 on trucks. When they see 11 digit VIN's they think they are wrong.


ALL DMV's have books that show sample titles from US states, and countries worldwide. The books also have sample VIN's for all vehicles dating back to 1948/50.

Getting someone to actually LOOK in those books can be a PITA.

Seeing is believing: Ford Parts Catalogs = General Information Section, show samples of the VIN plates used and sample VIN's from whatever time period the particular vehicle is from. The catalog that pertains to 1964 is the: 1964/72 Ford Truck Parts Catalog. Page 33 of this catalog shows the VIN plate used in 1964 (1965 is the same) and a sample VIN. Ford parts catalogs are the source for ALL VIN decodes.

That was exactly the problem I had at my local AR DMV, the books actually said all Ford truck VINs start with F, I had to take a pic of the plate along with enough of the truck to make them believe that it was for real. Then they told me "OK, we'll send it in, but the head office will kick it back". Idiots!

last time i went to get a title, for my 79 it was a pain too, and the few times before when i got antique tags it wasnt a problem, but the last time i did they had me fill out an avadavit that said under no circumstances would i modify the vehicle and it was only to be driven to shows and whatnot, course i drive it every day, guess what they dont know dont hurt em

If the state would enforce the laws pertaining to antique vehicles, 99% of the ones running antique tags wouldn't be.

I had zero issues getting regular tags on mine the first time. I had a bill of sale and the title though.

Mine has the antique tags now, but it is pretty close to stock. Still the stock suspension, stock drivetrain, vacuum wipers, stock seat, etc. Just has halogen headlights and power brakes now.

I think mine qualifies as that 1% Jeff spoke of that are legal.

Actually Brian, anything that can be safety related such as lights and brakes (also seat belts) are allowed.

They are sitting in a cardboard USPS box in my living room though. ;)

I paid $9 shipping for two shoulder belts (with the re-wind in boxes), and a lap belt, plus all the bolts. They came out of a 90 F-250. They are the ford gray color to match my carpet and headliner and look nearly new. :-X22
