3rd Brake light leak
 

I am fully aware of this problem and ford has a solution to it. However, I dont want to spend the whole day at the dealership waiting for them to unscrew two screws for the brake light and put in a new gasket.


Can I get away by using a BLUE RVT sealant underneath the third brake light to prevent water from entering into the cabin?

yeah, I did that and it worked. The only problem is that when you need to change the bulb (in the future), you will have a problem with cleaning up the RTV. I bought a new LED light off of eBay for $20, and have had no problems.

try asking them to get teh part, and set an exact time for you to stop by and have a service tech replace it while you wait, or have them give you the part if they will sicne you would be removing yours by yourself anyway.

how about clear silicone instead of blue rvt? It doesnt need a strong bond or nothing, just needs to keep the water out

i used some 3m strip caulk. it worked well and allows you to remove the light if needed...doesnt bond. keeps the water out. only thing is i put too much on there and when it rains it runs down my rear window and leaves a film in a couple spots.

I think Ill give the silicone a shot. If that doesnt work, then RVT. Thanks guys

You can probably buy the part for next to nothing, most dealers won't just give them to you, I know my dealer wouldn't just give me the part for my Cobra when I had it when it had a TSB. It was just a metal plate under the gas pedal to hold the carpet, I bought it for $7, well worth the peace of mind of doing it myself and not some joker driving it around.

I hear you on that sir. My truck almost comes back with the radio on some rap station and I have a feeling that they play with my ride. They just love the double din touch screen..... :-lamesign

yes, it will work. just put the RTV on the bottom of the old gasket and it will seal to the truck.

made an apointment for mine and it took 40 mins to do it and a the normal lube oild filter....no more leaks, no silicone half ass job.....let em fix it.

well from my understanding, they are going to replace the third brake entirely. I have an aftermarket LED 3rd brake light and I am just going to use the silicone method. Thanks guys

dont "glue" it use 3M Microfoam
 

DONT use rtv or silicone. RTV will make a mess and silicone will stick like glue. How will you ever get it off if you have to change the blulb???? I just took mine off and put a layer of 3M Microfoam over the old gasket, all the way around it, and not one leak since !! "3M Microfoam" has one adheasive side and is waterproof. Alot cheaper than $40 for the fix (new assembly) from Ford. You can buy 3m microfoam at any drug store, I got mine @ CVS. Look near the bandaids and bandages.

Speaking for my light back in 2004, they did not replace the light but used a sealer and reused. Hasn't leaked since.

i used clear rtv, it worked right, just slice it with a knife when you need to change the bulb, and reapply clear rtv when you put it back together. This has been a problem on fords since third brake lights on trucks came out. My 96 does this...
