Allison 6 speed behind a 6.0L
 

Has anyone put an Allison 6 spd behond a 6.0L powerstroke? If so what do I need to make it work?

what's wrong with the six speed you got .

Not that i know of. But to make it work you would need an adapter plate to bolt it to the motor, not sure of the length difference in the cases and you would need a computer to control it at very the minimum.Probably some other adapters as well.

This begs the quesion why would you want to do this? The 6spd Allison is Not superior to the 6spd Torqueshift. The Torqueshift takes more abuse than the Allison.

Allisons have been used behind the 6.0 powerstroke in the F650s so it is possible. Here is a link to the 2007 build guide. Note its the 5 spd allison.

I agree with that!! I gotta buddy that's only done a chip and exhaust and has had to rebuild his Allison twice. I haven't touched my 5R110W except for a Torque Converter and I've dyno'd at 586.4HP and 1204 lbs-ft. I race her on the weekends and drive her daily all week. Ok, so I mostly race her around all week too, but dang it, it's mine to play with! :-fire

Don't be fooled by the Allison name badge. In my experiences with the Torqshift and the Allison, I definitely think the Torqshift is a far superior tranny, not to mention that it will take a lot more power without needing an update kit like the Allison needs. I compared the two descending down a 8% grade while towing the same boat and the Torqshift did a much better job at maintaining the speed as well as not overheating. The Allison is at max capacity with the power levels of the current Duramax output, whereas the Torqshift is barely over half capacity with what the PSD is putting out. Think it over long and hard before going down a costly road.

To clarify those that do not know the torque shift actually has 6 forward gears but it uses a strategy of 5 of the 6 when cold and different 5 strategy when warm. I can't recall if it is 3rd or 4th that gets skipped depending on if it is warmed up.

Because it uses only 5 forward gears in any strategy it is known to be a 5 speed tranny. Contrary to the newer Alison that uses all 6 forward gears regardless warm or cold operation.

Stock tranny form form my opinion the torqueshift is better than the Allison - marginally; contrary to the reputable name. If your are considering going through the trouble of pulling an Allison apart to improve it for your high HP needs and more trouble and money to put it behind a powertroke it would appear more economical and easier to get a reputable trannies from company such as Suncoast for the best torqueshift.

My opinion but eveybody will have one.

Check the service manual it is a 6 speed. The transmission uses two different shift stategies depending on engine temperatures.

Cold Engine = 1,2,3,4 & 6
Warm Engine = 1,2,3,5 & 6

Gear Ratios"
1st = 3.09
2nd = 2.20
3rd = 1.54
4th = 1.09
5th = 1.00
6th = 0.71

The TorqShift also has the "Tow Haul" mode which alters the shift points based on load and driving style.

Blackhat and BC are correct. The 5R110 was developed as a six speed. It has been marketed as a 5 speed because of the close ratio between 4th and 5th and how it was calibrated.

find it funny how people get cought up in a NAME,the chevy allison 1000 IS NOT the school bus,garbage truck,dumptruck, motorhome trans that gave allison it's great name,so you have an allison in your chevy/gmc,so what,you just got snuckered,it's all a name game,just like best buy is not alway's the best buy,i've seen radio shack beat them on price,they just have more choice's than radio shack.
