Air chisel recomendation
My Harbor Freight air chisel gave up the ghost. I had it for several years but probably didn't use it a total of one hour. I borrowed my buddies that he got from Snap On, a fine tool but pricey! Any recomendations on a quality tool. I don't ever want to buy another.

I use a Harbor Frieght HD air hammer. I bought it about 1 year ago with like 10 chisels for $10. The old timers at work gave me crap and made jokes about it. I upgraded to a quick change holder instead of that dumb spring POS. So now those old timers have taken their air hammers home to use and borrow mine when they need it. For $10 I can just keep buying new Air hammers.
I would recommend any IR air tool because if it does break replacement parts are available to repair it. |
I have a Matco-branded IR, have had it almost ten years, with many hours on it. No problems so far. It is really sensitive to air pressure, though- anything below 90, and it has very little power.

The only way to go in air tools is I/R. They are the best for the money but any air hammer, from a large paving breaker on down to a small gasket scraper will self destroy if you apply power without the work end of the tool being pushed down against something. When you run the tool wothout downward pressure, the piston strikes the front end of the cylinder rather than the end of the chisel. this will break the piston.

I have a CP-716 Zipgun.
It is over thirty years old and outperforms anything that I have seen. It hammers slowly enough that it is easily controlled. But it has a long stroke so that it hits hard. You can make it hit just once or twice which is often all you need. The problem with most of them is that they have a short stroke and hammer at a very rapid pace which makes them more difficult to control. |
i got the same one as Bdox an im very happy with it. my dad bought it new probably 25-30 years ago also.it ben taken real good care of its still in the origanal box with lots of duct tape around it
