will this dana44 fir and work in my 87?
 

hey guys my twin I beam dana 44 in my 87 (front rearend) is shot. Can i install a dada 44 out of my buddy's parts truck? its a strait axle D44. it has same gears in it and is in good shape. he says i can have it and i can have all the steerign linkages and brackets i need. also i can get the driveshaft off of it also. will it work or do i need a D60? The only time ill need 4x4 is whenever its wintertime. I also am installing a plow for onfrotn of the truck. its pretty heavy plow and its a 9 fooot plow.

what year truck is the 44 out of??

Stub axles break in a 44 rather easily.
U joints also break easily.

A 9 foot plow will probably be to heavy for a 44 as well.
A 9 footer will probably need spring upgrades as well, a set of Ride Rite air bags would work well.
I hope you are only plowing big lots.

Plowing snow, you need the 60.

ok thanks dave! that dana 44 i could get would have been out of a 1980. if it would been strong enough id put it in cause it would been free.

86.5 to 96 are bolt in, but you really want a king pin axle over a ball joint axle. the switch to ball joints was in 92 i think.

i found out my plow is actualy a 8.5 foot wide. i am tryign to find a dana 60 but no luck yet..

I paid 1500 for a 92 model Dana 60.
I also put another 1500 in it before I installed it.
Limited slip, new ball joints, all new bearings, all new tie rods, new trac bar and all new mounting harware.

With the parts not wearing out or breaking and the resulting downtime, I have already recovered 1/2 the cost or more in two years.

With the 44 I had to spend several hundred every year to pass inspection, tie rods and ball joints.
Also usually had to replace one or two U joints in the axles.
And about every other year I had to replace the lock out hubs.

In two years all I have done to the 60 is grease the ball joints and tie rods and change the oil in the axle.

My 44 was the IFS one, I also have increased the tire life by a year.

With a 8.5 foot plow you will not be going through any drive thru's.
We do to many banks lots.
A 7.5 foot is all I can get through most of them.

When I get to the mall, I wish I had a bigger plow.
I have been thinking about a set of pro wings for the bigger lots.
