Cold Air Intake system for 1992-1996 F 150

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 13-Aug-02 AT 10:38 PM (EST)]
I have a 1992 F 150 5.0/302. I put a K&N aircharger kit which gets rid of the factory box and filter. The problem was that the filter was sucking in too much hot air from the engine and there are no cold air or cool air induction kits out there. I came up with a design that gave my filter cool air and i definately feel a difference in performance. If you are interested in buying the design or you have any questions, please email me at

cobra325@optonline.net

It took me a lot of time to design the system and it is very simple.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 23-Aug-02 AT 04:31 PM (EST)]The factory air box and inlet system is cold air intake, why did you remove it?

You could have just purchased a replacment K&N air filter and put it in the stock air box.

Now what you have is a lot of wasted time, and an air intake system that is exactly what your vehicle came with stock, just looks a little different.

Correct me if I'm wrong! But I dont think so.

Depending on his design, it probably lets more air in, and is less restrictive. The stock does grab cold air, but not much, and it is pretty restrictive.

Thank you MustangGT221, the stock system is very restricting, and my design has a box formed to the hood and gets more cold air b/c i relocated the inlet, and i got rid of the stock system b/c i put in a K&N filtercharger kit b/c drop in filters dont do as much as the filterchargers. My design is a lot more appealing to the eye as well ;)

It may be more apealing to the eye, but I do not agree with the performance side of it.

If the stock air cleaner is so "restrictive" then FORD wouldn't have used it. If the filtercharger system is so much better, then FORD would have included it.

The reason they didn't include it is because the exact problem you ran into, it pulls in HOT air from the engine compartment. Which degrades the performance of your engine.

By modifing the filtercharger system, you are making it more restrictive, therefore you end up with the same performance you could've had in the stock air cleaner assembly with a K&N filter inside.

Thats what I think.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 24-Aug-02 AT 05:37 PM (EST)]I have a 93 explorer and this past summer I installed a KKM tru-rev intake kit. If you have not seen this, it is an filter that bolts directly to the MAF sensor and drawls air out of the engine compartment.

Yes, it does draw in warmer air that if it was a cold air system. The reason ford went with the stock air system it for a couple of reason
1. It is quiter. When i punch the throttle it makes some noise under the hood. Most people don't want to hear this so so ford built a system to stop the noise.
2. northen winters. The stock system has a heat riser to help it run in cold weather espically just after start-up.
3. Emitions. This also is why there is a heat riser. The heat riser does very little to help emitions but there is not a big diference.

One of the many probles with the stock setup was how hot the air intake and the airbox were. when i would get done driving, these parts would be extreamly hot. So they had to be heating up the incoming air. By getting rid of the stock system there is less time for the air to get heated. Also i feal that at most driving speed there is enough air moving through the engine compartment that there is little change in the air tempture going through the filter.

The kit decreased my 0-60 time by half a second and greatly improved my hwy milage. for the exact number go to the explorer forum and do a search for "kkm tru-rev kit" and i have posted the exact increases in milage and the 0-60 times.

I think your statement is just that, an opinion. Whether you think so or not (no offense) the stock system is very restrictive, i mean...look at it. The air has to get sucked through all that tubing and duct work with many angles, and with the K&N style they have 360 degrees of air coming in vs just air from the bottom through all that duct work. Most all car/truck companies airboxes are restrictive. I was looking at my friends Honda S2000 and it's restrictive too. Keep in mind that the little duct that goes over the radiator, doesn't scoop up much air when the hood is closed. My I-6 had a better one, where there was a tube right in the grill opening, not ontop of the radiator like my 302. The stock boxes need to be inclosed to avoid problems. If the owner changes it to a K&N, than more dirt and the possibility of water around it increases. Those stock airboxes are made to keep water out of there too. He said himself he noticed a power difference, so with all due respect don't knock something until you try it.

And, ya...ford would use it because it's enclosed and they don't have to worry about people complaining about anything.

Performance is not the sole design parameter that Ford's engineers use. They are obviously constrained by cost and emissions standards but there are still others. Ford's NVH (noise vibration and harshness) standards are to put it mildly idiotic. They make perfect sense when applied to a Crown Vic but none at all whenthe same standards are applied to a Mustang Cobra or a truck. Intake noise is considered unacceptable and they will sacrifice performance to eliminate it. On a 93 5.0 Mustang there was a free 3-5 HP available simply by gutting the silencer from the intake duct.

The cold air duct on my 96 is unbelievably small and has to create a significant pressure drop in the intake air box. The open K&N filter is a questionable tradeoff because of underhood temperatures. A non-restrictive cold air inlet is clearly the way to go. I experimented with a few variations but never came up with one that worked properly and didn't look like hammered s**t.

There's a web site that did all the comparisons and shows what gave increase and decreased performance. It's called PROJECT MPG , but I can't remember the site. Maybe someone else does. I've seen it posted here many times. It turns out the only thing that gave a real performance and MPG gain was to insulate the stock induction tubes with a drop in K&N.

ford makes restricting heads and use them so why can't they use their restrictive airboxes jbery

I have like 1/16' sheet metal with some solder (super strenght crap) and then duct tape very neat. But it is about 5 inched long, by like 2.5 inches and then comes up and almost flips 90 degrees to 2x5 to fit into the air box, it gave me crazy results in hotter weather because for some reason i ripped off both of the stock tubes that goto the air box so it was just hot air going in.

I guess you could say this is custom... and i could prob sell it too :-)
