HFCM drain mod?
Is there a drain petcock mod or something with a handle on it that can be plugged into the HFCM?
I just bought a used '05 F350 and the hex screw drain plug on the HFCM looks worn - as if the previous owner used the wrong size allen wrench and augered it out. And I'm new to all this, but it sure looks like water/fuel will drain onto the frame rail and then "ride" the rail and spill all over the place instead of just into a drain cup. It would seem like someone has come up with some sort of drain valve with a handle or petcock like on a radiator that makes draining the HFCM something that can be done by hand and would be cleaner (no rail, or down the arm, riding). Is there? |
There is the Replacement HFCM Drain Plug that you can remove by hand or hex. I have installed mine but haven't had to drain yet. Also, cut the bottom of a two liter bottle so it will fit under the drain hole.
The Ford Plug # is 6E7Z-9C082-A The International Plug # is 2589259C91 Moon |
I just installed the IH drain plug this weekend and it is MUCH better than the stock one. Same Allen wrench to remove, but if for some reason rounded out, it can be removed by hand (if not too tight) or with pliers. It also will not fall completely out, so acts somewhat as a fluid director and creates much less spill. For $18 is a great little upgrade.

I had the International plug for some time, had no need to drain the filter. Last week on my 15000 checkup the dealer installed it when he changed the filter.

Exactly what I was looking for. Thanks, folks.
Any difference between the Ford or International part? Any reason I should use one over the other or is it the same part just in two different manufacturers' catalogs? |

The stock ford part and the IH part are different. The stock ford part, the head actually recesses back in slighltly, just about flush with the HFCM body. The only way to remove it is with the allen wrench. The IH part has a much larger head that sticks out about 3/4" from the body. It is knearled so you can remove it with fingers if not too tight, or with pliers. It also uses the same size allen wrench. When taken out, the IH unit will also remain in the whole where the stock ford unit comes clear out. Makes for much easier draining and it actually acts to direct the fluid as it is being drained.

Cool. Thanks for the clarification. I sure don't know why they would have chosen to use the much smaller one for these trucks, what to same $2 per truck?? Well, I guess for a lot of guys that just drive and let others deal with the maintenance, it is OK. I sure like having things done right though. This drain plug is just a much better way to go.

Just changed my fuel filters and added this...is really nice versus the stocker.. Got mine from powerstrokeshop when I ordered my filters...It will be nice in a pinch not having to hunt around for the 6mm allen wrench
