Trailer wiring F350
 

I understood that some Super Duty trucks came pre-wired for trailer brake installation. I installed the trailer brake controller to the quick plug under the dash to the right of the steering column. When I check the brake feed comming from the controller (blue wire) the little green light on the contoller lights up. This would indicate that it is properly installed (I think).
I then installed a Hoppy trailer plug (Part #40165) at the back of the vehicle and checked that the wire color and function matched. No such luck, the blue wire at the rear of the vehicle which should be the trailer brake, is now a brake lite.
I want to wire a 7 pin trailer plug to the #40165. Can anyone help, I'm really confused.

First according to what I can find the hoppy 40165 is a 4 wire trailer hookup not the 7 way blade.

Second, what do you mean the blue wire is a brake light? The blue wire should get voltage whenever the brake pedal is pressed in the truck, that is how the electric brakes work. The actual brake lights for trialer wiring are wired seperate for the left and right sides (red and brown). That is what allows the flashers to work.

Make sure the fuses and relays are installed in the under-hood junction box, drivers side adjacent to master cylider. Look in your owners manual for location and auxillary fuse block description.

I will check the fuses and relays, Thanks. Beerstalker your right, the blue wire should only have voltage when the brakes are applied. The voltage should increase as the brake adjuster is increased from low to maximum. However in this case my testlight shines brightly as soon as the brake is applied. I will check the actual brake light (red and brown) for current. The 40165 conector has a four pin connector as well as an additional blue and red wire. Thanks for your help, I will keep trying!!

Just checked the submitted wiring diagram. It appears the wire color is different in Canada. Still working at it.

hjesq, if you are trying to add a 7 way rv plug why not just buy ont that plugs directly in, rather than taking the 4 way harness you have and cutting it up? Draw-tite makes a harness 118243 that I know works on the 99-01 super duty, I am pretty sure it will work for your truck too. You can usually get it at the local U-haul place or trailer stores for $35-60US.
