How big is my fuel tank?
 

I did a search but I didn't have any luck. I have an 2002 F250 crew cab 4x4 with the 7.3L, I thought it has a 29 gallon tank. Usually when I get gas I just stop when the pump shuts off which typically would be 25 to 27 gallons so I thought a 29 gallon tank sounded about right. Well the other day I filled it up until I could see fuel up to the gas cap and it took about 29 gallons but I still had almost a 1/4 tank left before I got gas, my gas light wasn't even on yet. So I'm thinking that it is probably around 35 gallons, does that sound right? I know I'm only down to 1/2 tank since then but I've gone about another 100 miles more than I normally would have before.

LB has 38 gallons
SB has 29 gallons

I have put 38.1 gallons in my truck and it will still running...something to do with how you can't filled it up all the way(yea right...)

I have the short bed so that would mean I have the 29 gallons. Now I'm really confused on where all this extra gas went unless the stations pump is ripping me off but that would not explain the extra 100 miles I reached at 1/2 a tank mark. I guess I'll how much I get in there on the next fill up.

DO NOT believe the fuel gauge...it is notoriously bad...if you believe that gauge you will find yourself walking and wishing you had bought fuel at the last truck stop. I have seen gauges that read a half-tank that take 20 gallons at fillup (29 gallon tank). You have a 29 gallon tank unless someone has modified it.

Don't believe the 29 gallon spec. I have put 32.5 in mine a couple of times. You should be running out at that point.

Spec in the manual says 29 but mine will hold like Fats, somewhere around 32-35 maybe more cause i never run it past the fuel light very often. Almost every time i can squeeze 31 gallons in when the light comes on.

i have put 42.5 gallons in my 38 gallon tank once. It wasn't even the empty. Last fillup the gauge was down past the red mark where the guage stops when you turn the key off, and it was still running.

I have never seen the light come on in my truck. I don't even know if it works. When I get to 1/4 tank left, I fill her up. She usually takes between 25-27 gallons depending on how far down i let her go- so I agree. 29 gallons seems off.

Think of it though- thats what the man uses to calculate the MPG rating on the sticker of a new one.

I've put as much as 33.5 gallons in mine, and it wasn't even puking out the filler. I also went 655 miles on that tank. Gotta love the highway.

I've gotten almost 31 in my 29G tank, but that was filling it to the neck, and it wasn't all the way empty. 34-35 seems a bit excessive though. Makes me wonder if that particular pump is being a little....er....liberal on the numbers...

I used to think that about the pumps around here until I did the hutch mod. Now they are pretty consistent. I am getting anal about though, as there are only 2 stations where I fill my truck.

Getting bad diesel just isn't fun, and those 2 have 100s of big truck filling up daily.

Without the Harpoon and Hutch mods, the foam will cause the pump to kick off at a point where you can typically squeeze an additional 4-5 gallons into the tank (when taking it up the filler neck to the tippy-top.

I've put as much as 28.5 gallons in once, and the gauge was somewhere a little below 1/4 tank, but my gauge also doesn't drop from the full mark until I've gone at aleast 100 miles (typically 115-130 miles).

I'm going to find out exactly how much diesel is left in my tank at a low gauge level when I do my in-tanks next weekend.

Here's a question for everyone. Is there a way to re-range the level measurement unit while I have it out of the tank in order to get a little more accuracy? Has anyone tried and succeeded at this?

Bend the rod that the float is mounted to. No, I have not tried it but I'm sure it can be done. Take a look at it when you get in there and you will see what I mean. That's the float/arm on the right in the below pic. BTW, I wouldn't go below a 1/4 tank if I didn't have any in-tank mods.
