will ranger trans bolt up to 302?
hey guys, i have a question...will a ranger 5 speed trans bolt up to a 302? i was told the 5 speed behind the 3.0 and 4.0 will but no one has said anything about the 2.3 trans. what i am doin is boltin up a 302 in my 78 f-100 street truck to use as a daily driver. the t-18 4 speed is just out dated and wont run at the speeds needed at a good RPM. so i want to bolt up a 5 speed. i know that the 90's f-150 and rangers used the same trans. im havin a hard time locating a trans, but i need to know what trans to look for when calling around.

C-4 will bolt up with the correct bell housing

The 2.3 5 speed trans (M5R1) will not work. You want an M5R2 from behind a 300 six or 302 V8.
|
ok i dont want a ^*# automatic. and i do know that some rangers had 5 speeds that would bolt up to 302. had a buddy a few years back who did it. he has since moved and i dont have the contact info. what i want to know is...is it the 3.o trans or the 4.0 trans? or are those two the same? at some point, rangers and f-150's used the same trans.
|
M5OD is the 5speed that came in the 4.0 Rangers...dont know how well a stock M5OD will hold up with a 302 but I highly recommend you upgrade the internals. That **** automatic c4 is hands down better than a Ranger tranny haha.
|
yeah i know a C4 has a good rep. but its like they say, you get one that still works you might actually have somethin, the ones that dont are heavy duty paper weights. i own 2 C4's a C6 an AOD an E4OD and a C5 and i just dont like automatics. the reason i have those is because i took them out of their original home for a swap w/ a manual. i would much rather buy and have to repair an M5OD than deal w/ an automatic anyday. i DO know that the mazda (M5OD) was/is junk. oh well. this is not a high horsepower truck anymore. the big block was taken out and the truck is being restored into a daily driver (no hauling anything) so a ranger trans will work just fine. thats all i needed was the model number becuase i couldnt remember it. but through your sarcasm you have helped.

Mustang T 5 with Chev S10 model shifter location might could be another answer.
http://www.moderndriveline.com/index.htm As for an automatic, beefed AOD would be better if you hit the wall on your manual efforts. C4 is fine for a 3 speed..... |

i understand there are TWO diff trans, but i literally watched a guy take a trans out of a wrecked ranger and then take it home and bolt it up to a ranger that he had put a 302 in. the wrecked ranger did not have a 302, i dont know what motor it had in it that is what i am trying to find out. it is easier to get ranger trans than f-150 cause the rangers werent much count and there are A LOT in junkyards. |
Very interesting. I'd like to know too now. Never followed the ranger info too much before.

As near as I can tell, these are the engines with the same bellhousing bolt pattern (and therefore would use the same trans) as a 302:
3.8 RWD/3.9/4.2 V6, 255 V8, 6 bolt 289 V8, 302 V8, 351W V8, 351C V8, 240 I6, 300 I6 There are a couple odd balls that I left out (early mods, certain '73 400M). I don't know that any of the 302 compatible engines came from the factory in a Ranger. |
ok so a 3.9 and a 4.2 have a 302 bellhousing...why wouldnt a 4.0 have the same bellhousing? its inbetween the two, maybe it is the same bolt pattern? or no?
|
No, the 4.0 is a whole different animal than the 4.2L which is based off the 302. Donno bout that 3.9L.

hmmm....wish i still had the guys number. i know i can find an M5OD from a f-150. i guess thats what i'll do, i just wanted to know what trans it was that worked. i know he used a ranger trans. just dont know which one.

and i do know that some rangers had 5 speeds that would bolt up to 302 The 2.3/3.0/4.0L tranny can be used with an adaptor. The 4.0L version will hold up to a stock or mildly build 302, but will give in once upgrades have been made to the engine. Clutch will go first. The 2.3L and 3.0L version will snap the minute you take off hard even with a stock 302. They cannot take the power output. The 4.0L shares nothing with the 3.8/4.2L or the 3.9L. The 4.0L is a Cologne series engine from Germany. The only engines that share that bolt pattern is the 4.0L OHV and 4.0L SOHC. 3.0L is totally unique. The 2.3L shares a bolt pattern with it's alternate version the 2.5L. You will need the M5OD-R2 out of an F-150, as said before. |
