I`m new to this board and to the world of 4x4`s. I just bought a 83 bronco with a C-6 trans and I think it needs a rebuild. Do I
have to pull the transfer case with the trans or can I just pull the trans?

Yes the transfer and transmission are best pulled as a single unit but, a very heavy akward assembly to handle. You might have to make a rack to accept it and balance them when you go to re-install.

I would Recommend removing the Transfer case, the Transfer case isn't that heavy and can be handled by one person. Then go ahead and remove the Transmission. You are going to have to seperate the two anyhow in order to bring the Tranny to the shop! so you might as well make removing the tranny easier by doing it in the truck.

Are you pulling the tranny in your driveway? I must say that I will never do that again! I've done a few in my time, though. But if you are, and don't have professional equipment, here's what I used to do when I was younger and used to do things like pull trannies in my parent's driveway (they loved it, especially when I didn't have enough money to get the tranny rebuilt and the vehicle would sit on jackstands, I mean cement blocks, for a few weeks or months). Anyway, this may sound ridiculous, but it works great. You need a scissor jack and a skateboard. You simply put the jack on top of the skateboard, and under the tranny. Then as you unbolt it, it won't drop down, and you can roll it out once all the connections are free. This also works great to put the tranny back in. A bottle jack might work too, the scissor jack is better because it is much shorter when in the down position.
