Changing speedometer gear
 

I think that the speedometer gear in the transfer case (1987 F150 4x4) is dead, because the speedometer gear that came off the sender is really distorted. Is it supposed to be like that? see where it dips down by the shaft? If I have to change that pinion gear, how hard is it...do I just split the transfer case and its there? https://i175.photobucket.com/albums/...g?t=1176782894

bump.........do I just have to unbolt the back half of the case and it'll be there to fix?

edit.......is the gear on the inside of the transfer case metal? or is it plastic too?

The DRIVE gear is on the output shaft. Some are metal and are part of the shaft itself, most aren't, and are plastic with either 6, 7 or 8 teeth. Do you have the transfer case Ford ID number (includes 7A195), or know what the case is (New Process NP203 for example)? Let me know, I'll give you the part number.

The DRIVEN gear is not supposed to look like the one you posted. Yours is defective with that dip. That defect may or not be caused by the drive gear. If someone doesn't have the gear correctly installed on the cable using the C clip, the gear will have too much play..the results show in your pic.

I'm pretty sure if you pull the yoke, then the seal, you can work your way far enough to pull the gear without splitting the case on a 1345..but I MAY be thinking of a different t-case...

It's a Borg Warner 1345 case, I'll see if I can find the number, I think the tag got torn off. If I just put in a new driven gear and see if that works, and there's a defect in the drive gear, will it hurt the new driven gear? I felt inside and found out that the drive gear is indeed plastic.

Kinda depends on the condition of the drive gear. You should be able to see it fairly well from the outside with a light and maybe a mirror...Even if its somewhat worn, I would probably give it a shot, but knowing not to expect a full life out of it..the gears are not that much...these guys are really good to work with, and may even help you out if you call them:

Gears for yours are waaaaayyy down towards the bottom.

Just a thought, all that plastic went somewhere, when you get it back together, you probably ought to change the oil in your case.

well the new driven gear sorta works, not it bounces back and forth like it used to, so I'm guessing that I still need a new drive gear. Are they the same for any ford transfer case because the driven gears seem to be.......i.e. could I get the drive gear out of a BW 1356 and put it in my 1345?

Have you checked the drive cable between the Tranny and speedo? Bouncing speedo usually means a binding cable, the distorted driven gear would seem to confirm this.

I took my cable off the speedo and the t-case, pulled the cable out of the housing, and cleaned it and then tied a rag around the bottom of the housing and sprayed brake cleaner through the housing until it, too was clean, blew it out/dry with compressed air, then coated the cable with Kroil and put it back in, and it has been fine since. No more bounce..worth a try, nighthawk!

yeah, except that I dont have a cable anymore. I got an autometer electronic sender to go with the gauge I got, so theres nothing to bind up. Thats why I think that its the gears. But that would have been worth a shot.

Yea, I can see where soaking the wires in Kroil probably wouldn't do it for you then.

I'm not sure on the drive gear being the same..Best bet on that one is to get it out and match it up.

Other than the bouncing, you like that Autometer setup? I was thinking about putting one in one of my old projects...matching tach, etc...

Speedo cables are two pieces, the outer housing and the inner woven steel cable.

Speedo inner woven cables need to be greased, if left to run dry, they will cause the needle to jump, will eventually bind in the housing and snap. White lithium grease works fine. Don't overdo the "lube" job..a little bit goes a long way.

Yeah, the oil will probably just make a bit of a mess down there in the wires.... I'll see if I can find another 1345 transfer case to take apart at the wrecking yard and see what I can find.

Yeah I like the Autometer gauge. I got the 3 3/8" Phantom series speedometer and put it in the stock place of mine (in dash). Only thing is that it is REALLY bright compared to the other lights, so I might slip on the green cover that came for the LED inside.
