2007 f150 5.4V8 Rough Idle?????

I have an 07 f150 v8 5.4 and it idles very rough. When i start it it seems to start reallut it y rough and just about everytime im stopped its shaking just enough to annoy me. Do you think its the spark plugs? I took into the dealer about a month ago and they said everything was fine. But its still doing the same thing. Also the A/C tottaly sucks is that they way it is? I live in los angeles and it gets 120+ deg in the summer is there anyway to fix that? When i accelerate the cold air gets kinda warm and it doesn't get cold until i get up to speed.

1. what is your problem? the truck has a rough idle I'm guessing.

have you ever owned a truck before? not trying to be snide, but the trucks "run" rougher. this is due to stiffer motor mounts, and less drivetrain shielding than a car.

or you could have a misfire. it's not likely though since you said the dealership already called it good...

2. your A/C is on the brink? make sure the A/C button is selected. at idle, the rpm are a little low so the compressor isn't that efficient, so it won't blow as cold, but it should blow somewhat cold. a temporary loss of cooling might occur, but should not last longer than a few seconds. try putting the cabin air on recirc. that will help the cabin air get colder quicker.

Yes this is my 6th ford truck, ive owned 4 superdutys and 2 f150's. I'm very experienced with these trucks and this 07 f150 deosn't feel right. And i mean the ac barely gets cold for a $45,000 truck it should get cold.

the A/C not blowing cold seems to be a problem for alot of people. wish I could help you. my truck blows freezing cold

I recommend you get back to the dealership to fix it.

Keep taking it back or go visit another dealer. My 07 has a rough idle, but haven't gone back for it to be checked out yet. My 03 did it and my wife's 04 Expy does too. Both of these were back to the dealer a few times, but it was never resolved. If the thing isn't throwing a code, tech's these days are helpless or worse, don't know how to diagnose problems like they used to....

Good luck finding the fixes to your issues. Can be frustrating with some dealers, but there are decent one's out there....

The 3V 5.4L's are known for having rough idle condition. The Expy has a TSB for it but the dealers don't want to deal with it for some reason. I've had my Expy in twice with this complaint so I feel your pain. However, my Screw is yet to have this problem. As far as the AC, I've read some made it to dealer lots without the Freon level being topped off. I do have that problem. Sometimes it's ice cold and other times it's ambient temp.

Does the truck have an auxillary fan in front of the condenser? If it is so equipped, and not working as designed, the a/c can not reject the heat it picks up in the cab via the evaporator, and then as you are able to move the vehicle the air is moving across the condesor so the in cab air is colder.

Well I can’t comment on the A/C, it’s still too cold around here for that. But as far as engine idle, mines silky smooth, if it wasn’t for the tach I’d think it stalled. Dealers seem to avoid work at all costs, so if it’s only a little problem they’ll feed you the “That’s the way it is” or “everything is fine” excuses. You’ll have to become very annoying for them to get anything done, that’s just been my experience in the past.

Do you think maybe if i put better spark plugs in it might smooth it out a little?

90taz 04-14-2007 02:47 PM

deel with it, its the charicteristic's of the motor. i agree it sucks for the price we pay for the vehicle, its just something you have to live with. just keep track of how many times you you take it in and how long you are without the vehicle. you can always lemon law it

Hey Matt15, I just bought my 07 F150 and so far so good. My friend is a Ford mechanic and states that the one flaw on this truck is the fuel filter (if you could call it a flaw). Make sure to change out the fuel filter at 15K miles. This could make the idle rougher than normal. Poor quality gas can also clog up the filter earlier than 15K.

Yours is a well documented complaint, my 4.6 idles a little rough also, seems to be a common trait of the modular engines. They SHOULD idle smoother than older models, as the motor mounts are not stiffer, but rather liquid filled, an attempt to reduce engine vibration. I suspect it's more of a fuel/air mixture issue, these motors seem to be designed to run pretty lean. And Ford service techs don't help much with their ""It's normal, they all do that" response. It being a truck has no bearing on idle quality, my old F-150 with a 302 idles much smoother than my '06. It DOES suck, but as 90taz says, it's just something we'll have to put up with.

Very strange...my '07 is very smooth. I can hear it, but there is no noticable vibration in the cab.

Maybe you should insist on going out to the lot to see a new truck with the same motor, show them how it vibrates less, and see what they can do about it.

I have an 06 F350 with the 5.4 engine, and it idles so well, that it is hard to tell that it is running. I have a friend who wanted to drive the truck. I had it running when he got in the drivers side, and he turned the key to start it. I told him that it was running, and he looked at the tach, and told me that he didn't realize it was running, because it was so quiet, and smooth.

Tylus 04-14-2007 11:00 PM

a rough idle in the 5.4 is not normal. mine is so quiet that I can't tell it's running

if I let it idle for about 15 minutes (line at the bank) it will start to get the faintest rumble, but thats it.

a slightly rougher idle in the 4.6 is normal. it does it in the majority of the trucks, exploders, mustangs, and sport tracs...no one knows why, but it does
