Convert 2WD trans to 4WD (auto)

I've got a friend with a 90 F150 4x4 with a dead AOD. He also has an 89 4x2 parts truck. Can you convert a 2wd AOD to 4wd and how hard would it be? How about a 2wd C6, can it be converted?

Thanks,

Either can be converter. All you need to do is get a 4x4 output shaft, take EVERYTHING out of the new trans, change the output shaft, and put it back together.

One of the users here named Arctic Y Block said in another thread he has converted several C6s and the trans does not need to be completely disassembled. IIRC he says you pull the trans, remove the valve body, stand it on the bellhousing end, remove the tail shaft housing, remove a snap-ring that holds the tail shaft in and carefully slide it out so as not to disturb the internals. Then you reverse the process using the "new" parts. If you go the C6 route maybe you could pm him and get more info.

That snap ring is behind the reverse clutch inside the case. The transmission has to be completly disassembled. The output shaft is the last thing to come out of the case.
