Tuning a Carb

I just installed an edlebrock 750 cfm manual choke carb part #1407 on my 1979 ford Bronco with a 460. I dont have any guages to actually help me tune the carb and i was wondering how i could tune it for torque at what teh manual says is 12 which will run rich. Right now when i first give it gas after it is warmed up the bronco really wont go anywhere but then the second time i press down on the pedal it starts to go but continues to backfire which sometimes stalls the engine. It wont even really back out of the driveway which is at about 30 to 45 degree incline and i have to give it a lot of gas and sometimes it wont go. If anyone can give me advice on tuning it without the guages or a cheap place to actually get it tuned it would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like the carb is really running rich. The back firing could be caused by fuel puddling in the intake. Double check that the choke is being released. Also, make sure you have a clean air filter. Whats the exhaust look like? What do the spark plugs look like. The best guages for tuning a carb are the spark plugs and driving it (pay attention to throttle response).
