Where Did FORD Mount the Coil and Ballast Resistor?

I have a 1985 F-150 and I am swapping the EEC-IV/TFI ignition over to a stock Ford Duraspark II Ignition system. I figured out that the ignition module mounts on the driver's side plastic inner fender (the holes were already there on my '85). I would like to mount the coil and ballast resistor in the same place Ford did on the '80-'86 pickups. Can someone tell me the location of the coil and ballast resistor, and/or pics? Thanks!

The ballast resistor is a plastic coated wire that runs from the coil to the ignition switch. It's color coded red with green stripes. The same one has been used since the early 1970's with or without DuraSpark. There's one on your truck now.

See the second picture in post #7 Thread: Ford won't start-1973-79 Forum

There a general pic of the DuraSpark setup. This pic was posted earlier tonight. I'll bump it...

Thanks NumberDummy. Actually, I bought the Painless Wiring Duraspark wiring harness. What I was looking for is the exact PHYSICAL location that Ford mounted the coil (my '85 came with the E-coil and TFI ignition and I have no idea where Ford mounted the oil-filled Duraspark coil, or if Ford oriented it upright or sideways) If I buy the Duraspark coil from Ford, will it come with a bracket, or will I have to buy that seperate? Do you have a part number for that, NumberDummy?

What yr coil bracket do you want? There's at least 8 different ones used in the 80's, haven't looked at the 70's yet.

Engine size is? (It makes a difference)

My 1985 Ford F-150 XLT Lariat came stock with a 302 engine, 2-barrel carburetor, and the EEC-IV/TFI ignition system, NOT the Duraspark II ignition system.

I am switching the 2-barrel carburetor for an Edelbrock Performer Intake and a Holley 470 cfm Truck Avenger. That is why I am switching ignition systems.

I am CONVERTING my 1985 F-150 with a 302 engine over to a Duraspark II ignition system. I have never seen one before in real-life, because for some odd reason, all of the junkyards in my area only carry 1991 and up model vehicles. I have no idea where Ford mounted the stock oil-filled coil, how Ford positioned the coil, or the ballast resistor. So that is why I wanted to know EXACTLY how Ford mounted these parts.

Since 1983 was the last year Ford used the Durasprark II ignition system on F-150s that came with 302 engines, part numbers for a coil, coil bracket, and ballast resistor for a 1983 Ford F-150 with a 302 would be helpful.

Thanks again!

Ballast resistor (wire) is the same regardless. Only one was used from the 1970's thru 1989. Parts books only show basic pictures for the coil and related parts, so there's no way I can tell you how/where the coil mounts-sorry.

Note: 1981 coil and bracket is the same as 1985, but 1980 is different. The coil and bracket for 1980 is the same as: 1975/79. Here are those part numbers.

Numberdummy, thanks for the efforts, but you STILL gave me the wrong part numbers.

Note: 1981 coil and bracket is the same as 1985, but 1980 is different. The coil and bracket for 1980 is the same as: 1975/79. Here are those part numbers.

D5AZ-12029-A .. Ignition Coil (Motorcraft DY-236) 1975/80

D6AZ-12043-A .. Coil Bracket (Motorcraft DG-314) 1975/80

I asked for the part numbers for a NINETEEN EIGHTY-THREE (1983) Ford F-150 with a 302 V-8 engine. You gave me part numbers for a 1975/80. And, furthermore, the 1981 coil and bracket CANNOT BE THE SAME as a 1985. 1981 - 1983 F-150s used an oil-filled coil for the Duraspark Ignition system, while the 1984 - 1985 F-150s used an E-Core for the EEC-IV/TFI Ignition system. These two coils are completely different animals. In 1984, Ford went with a computer controlled ignition system with engines equipped with the 302 V-8 engine. However, these are the correct part numbers that I would need for a 1983 Ford F-150 with a Duraspark II Ignition system:

Motorcraft DG314 - Ignition coil (1983)
Motorcraft DY893 - Ignition module (1983)

I still don't know about the coil bracket, however, because Ford nor Motorcraft list these as being available. I was told that the bracket might come with the coil.

Thanks for the pictures, Subford. That is exactly what I was looking for. I would have thought that the coil would be mounted upright, but it looks as though Ford mounted them sideways. Go figure.

Motorcraft DG314 - Ignition coil (1983) This is a bracket, not a coil. Same number I listed above.
Motorcraft DY893 - Ignition module (1983)

I gave you the 1980 numbers simply because according to the parts book, the coil is the same for 1981 and up...meaning the one you have now is the same as 1981. Ditto for the bracket. Don't believe me? Here's the section and page number where that info can be found in the 1980/89 Ford Truck parts catalog. Section 120, pages 1 & 2. Find a Ford dealer, look in their book, and see for yourself!

NumberDummy, this is what you told me:

Note: 1981 coil and bracket is the same as 1985, but 1980 is different. The coil and bracket for 1980 is the same as: 1975/79. Here are those part numbers.

D6AZ-12043-A .. Coil Bracket (Motorcraft DG-314) 1975/80

Then you say:

I gave you the 1980 numbers simply because according to the parts book, the coil is the same for 1981 and up...meaning the one you have now is the same as 1981.

I don't get what you are trying to tell me here, sorry. I bought a coil that works for a 1981 - 1983 Ford F-150. But what you gave me were the part numbers for the DIFFERENT 1975/80 Ignition coil and bracket. If the coil and bracket is the same for 1981 and up, and I needed a coil and bracket for a 1983, WHY did you give me the part numbers for a 1975/80?

Maybe I am not reading this right, but again, thanks for your efforts.

Maybe to make sure you didn't end up with the wrong one ? ;)
