Tailgate Window Problem

I have an 89 Bronco whose tailgate window motor died the other day. The motor would try and raise the window but the window would go up and then come down a little. It would do it over and over again. When I inspected the motor after I took it out it was shot.

I got a rebuilt window motor from a dealer and put it in. After I installed it I then tested everything and I ran into a problem. The window goes down fine and the motor works fine at this time. It seems smooth without any binding. When I try to raise it, the window will only go about a third of the way up before it stops. You can hear the motor tryingto push further but the window will not move unless you assist it.

I know there is a counter balance but how can you tell if that is worn out? Does anyone have any suggestions on what could be causing it. What is the chance the motor could be defective? I have worked on the window in the past so I am familiar with it. I had to take out the old motor a few years ago to inspect it and when I put it back in everything worked just fine.

You might want to make some adjustments to your top, loosen the bolts and play with the window going up. When it stops binding then bolt the bottom sides down and the the top front's. Worked for me, don't have a problem anymore. Might not be your problem but its worth a try.

There are horizontal tracks along the bottom of the window that the arms run in. Lube them well with dry lube, white grease, etc. Also dry lube spray the channels the glass runs in.

Check the tailgate also. Make sure that there isn't alot of play in the latches and that both latches are catching. If the gate isn't closed all the way the window will hit the top on the back side of the window groove( Thats what mine is doing right now, gotta replace the gate latches and door post pins) Just another possibility.

Thanks but it starts to bog down right before it engates the weatherstriping on the top seal.
