Hard starting when cold
 

Does anyone know if there is a switch or sensor that acts as a choke on a 96 ford 351? My bronco is hard to start when cold, starts okay after warmed up. Could this problem be the fuel pump not putting out enough pressure when starting?

What do you mean by "hard starting?" Hard to crank, cranks too long, stalls, runs rough, etc.? A bad EGR will cause hard cold starting and rough running until it warms up.

Mine cranks too long and then runs rough, surging some, and stalls sometimes especially when put into gear. It runs rough at idle though(surging) all the time and I haven't pinpointed the problem yet.

Changed EGR valve, EVP sensor, PCV valve, spark plugs, wires, air filter, fuel filter and i think thats it.

That is the sympton exactly it seems to crank to long then it will fire and die. Then on the second try it will start but seems to run cold (like it has a carb with out a choke) but once it is warmed up it runs fine.

My mistake...a bad EGR valve does not cause those symptoms, I was thinking of something else (bad choke pull-off on a carb). But something may be causing your truck to run rich upon startup, wetting the plugs and causing it to run bad until it gets warm enough to dry the plugs. That is what a bad choke pull-off will do, although you do not have a choke, the symptoms are the same.

My bronco used to do the same thing. I had a 650 cranking amp battery in it. I replaced the battery with a 950 cranking amp battery and it started much easier!!:-X22

I am having the exact same problem. After starting it wants to idle at 400 to 500 RPMs instead of the usual 900 to 1200 when cold. After warming up it is fine. A plug, distributor cap, and plug wire change did not help. Seems electronic to me. Help us out one of you tech wrenches.8D

I hope someone has a idea.It seems like i am not getting enough fuel pressure at start up but it does sometimes smell like it is running rich. Any help please.

Check or clean out the air bypass valve. This is the "choke" of the fuel injection.

I posted earlier that mine is doing the same thing. Idles at 600 when idling, especially when cold and surges. Is 900-1000 the norm?

I'm going to check my Idle Air Bypass Valve.
