Smack!!!
I was heading to town today and my hood flew up. All I could see is my hood in my windshield. Shook my wife up a little bit. My hinges are toast. Hood is damaged more than likely repairable though. I won't bother repairing hood if I can find a decent one in salvage yard. I am even tempted to order one of the fiberglass ones to save weight. I guess I will be riding around like a redneck with no hood for a couple days.:-missingt

Good thing you could bring 'er to a stop without hitting someone or something..Glad to hear ya'll are OK
Ram air time:) or redneck ram air now:) |
I could go ram air but I think the truck breathes fine without it. Plus with my open style breather element a ram air setup would likely cause carb icing. If i go with a plain raceweight fiberglass hood I will loose alot of weight up front. It would never rust either. I just don't know if I can justify the 400 bucks plus shipping when metal hoods are 40 bucks at the salvage yard.
It would have to be the 40 for me...And when you pull the part, the hinges stay on the hood:)
Yep as much as I want to lighten my truck money is not abundant at the moment. I am still half tempted though.
I hear ya. It sure would lighten it a good bit changing to the fiberglass. The mustang has a fiberglass, and it has a few chips starting in the front...o well. Better than rust i guess.
Glad y'all are ok. Shame about your truck.Have you tried US Fiberglass to look for a lightweight hood?
I sure have. US body source is the only supplier I know of. I have drooled over their fiberglass body parts many times. I just wish they sold beds for my model. Would be sweet to have a 67-72 style truck weighing well under 3000 pounds. I can dream can't I.:)
Makes me wonder how hard it would be to make your own bed out of fiberglass?
If I could do fiberglass work I would have made myself a sweet little t-bucket long ago. I suppose someone who knew what they were doing could easily make the bed.

I appreciate that. Dunno when I will have the time or dollars to build a full fiberglass truck. Its gonna happen some day though.
I wonder if you could use the body parts as a mold, then make the new part....
I am just guessing at this because I have no knowledge of how fiberglass works. You may be able to do that. I think I could foresee an issue in removing it where it goes around corners. The reproduction peice would be slightly larger or smaller depending on whether you laid the glass on the inside or outside of part I would think. If your using fiberglass panels your not exactly worried about factory original anyway.

Just curious does he hand lay the fiberglass or use a chopper gun?
