Valve ajustment on 2.9

My son has a 86 with the 2.9 that makes quite a bit of lifter noise on one cylinder. I haven't worked on the 2.9 before and need to get a manual for it. Are the lifters on the 2.9 adjustable or not?

Any help appreciated.

The lifters on a 2.9 are hydraulic, and are not adjustable. The lifters in a 2.8 can be adjusted. What brand of oil and filter is he using?

I changed the oil this week end and put on a Motorcraft filter and Walmart 10-30. It sounded quite a bit quieter last night when I drove it home. The truck has 140K on it and he doesn't take very good care of it, so I took over the servicing. I was told on another webpage that they have hydraulic lifters, but that they kept the lifter adjustment that the 2.8 had on them. I'm going to pull the valve cover this weekend and make sure that it's not a bent rod and that everything is tight.

Try a better oil filter....Mobil 1. Try adding some Lucas Heavy Duty Oil Stabilizer.

The valve rockers on my 2.9 are adjustable. The the rocker for the #4 exhaust valve was not adjusted right. I was able to get all the lifter noise eliminated by adjusting it.
