427 Sohc on Craigslist
 

I was paging through Craigslist and came across a guy selling a 427 sohc still in the crate from the factory. He's asking $50. I think it's the real deal. Has a extra set of heads still in the Holman and Moody Boxes.

No, from what i have always known and heard is the 427 SOHC was known as the "cammer". Its basically a 427 side oiler? with a whole host of different parts. Most notably were the heads with the overhead cam. The cam was driven by a 7 foot timing chain. Very very powerful engine. Developed and built for racing applications, it never was an option on any cars, but was able to be bought over the counter for somewhere near $2500. Redline is about 7500 after that the timing chain developed slack and the 2 sides started having timing issues. Just what I have gathered over the years. Correct me if i am wrong on anything

The 427 SOHC had a single cam on each head. The small block Indy motor had dual over head cams (2 on each head). A cam on each head, even though there are 2 cams is still a single overhead cam because there is only a single cam over each head,

that 427 Sohc put out 617 horsepower, and the 427 DOHC put out 657 horsepower, too bad these bad boys were too powerful for Nascar, they would have ate the HEMIs alive, of course the plain jane Ford 427 Big block that put out 425 horsepower would probably whip the Hemi. i heard the Cammer 427 V-8's go for a pretty penny these days, i don't think too many are still around, bieng built only in 1965-66.

How about those aluminum 427 V-8's that were in the 65-67 SC Cobras, i heard they put out anywhere from 480-520 horsepower, of course, actual orginal cobras probably go for anywhere from $250k to $1million.

There was no DOHC 427.

Cobras used iron blocked side oiler wedge motors.

You could option a SOHC in a car, but I think as few as 50 were made.

Chrysler was working on a OHC hemi when NASCAR pulled the plug on non-production stuff like this.

Timing chains were 6 foot. The Hot Rod mag I have with the SOHC on the cover shows the engine all apart. Not sure about later ones, but the one they show is non-adjustable, all parts machined to fit, number one parts must stay number one type engine. Not very streetable that way...

"Fast but fragile".. is the description of them in Top Fuel. The 427 block starts to come apart with a big blower on top of it. I talked to a marine engine builder recently. 427s were good for about 11 hours of boat racing.
Detuned for ski boat use, they were as good as any.

There were a FEW old aluminum FE blocks cast. The famous flip top Cobra dubbed "the turd" driven by Ken Miles used a alumnium 427 block that was bored to 4.05" std 390. This block is still around today and was last sold on ebay like 2 years ago. Pretty cool.

The different horsepower ratings were a single 4 barrel and dual 4 barrels of the same motor. As said earlier, there never was a DOHC 427, only the SOHC motor. The reason NASCAR outlawed the Cammers was that they we too much horsepower. It was the start of the NASCAR "close competition" policy which is still in effect today.

oh, okay, yeah, now i remember the only diffrence between the Cammer 427's output was the single 4 barrel carb versus the daul four barrel carb.
