code P1248, Please Help
New to this forum, I recently bought an 02 Excursion 7.3 4x4 limited. Ive been driving my x now for 3 weeks and wasnt feeling that it had the power my old 99 7.3 dually had. So i brought it to the dealer for them to do a scan while driving, it came up with a p1248 code, Turbo concerns. although no ses light had come on in the last 3 weeks. They said they traced it back to a poor connection at the map sensor. When i did a search on google for that code it came up as Turbo boost not detected, I hear the turbo more now after the visit to the dealer and $290 dollars, but does this make sense, or should i start looking into replacing the turbo?
Thanks John |
The PCM determines boost by subtracting Barometric Pressure from MAP and decides how far to open the wastegate according to throtle demand. If the MAP is bad the PCM cant determine how much boost is being made. I would bet your turbo is fine.

And so $290 later, how is it running now? Did they tell you what they did? Was the dually a stick? I'm assuming the X is an auto.

I hear the turbo a little more when i first take off, but it still not as fast as my old truck which was an automatic. the dealer said poor connection at map sensor, they cleaned the connection at the map sensor and remapped the pcm. $130 was to hook the scanner up and road test so $160 to track down the problem and repair.

Man, I don't want to rant about the stealers so I will just say, check all of your intake boots to make sure you don't have a boost leak. That goes for the lines to the MAP sensor too. Check everything hooked to the intake side. A boost gauge would ID any problem here pretty quick.

I had the same code on my 99 F250 7.3 PSD. I checked the hose that runs from the MAP sensor to the intake and found it to be cracked and hard as a rock. I replaced it cleared the code and has never returned. I'd check this hose. Then buy yourself an OBD II scanner from the local MAC Tool distributor. You can get one for about $100.00 and pull your own codes. Beats taking it to the stealer. Model #ET75 and comes with computer software to look up codes. Hope this helps all.

If you get a scanner make sure it is capable of reading enhanced manufacturers codes or you wont be able to pull all of the powerstroke codes.

I did put a friends scanner on the truck when i was looking at buying it and no codes came up. From what ive read the $100 scanners dont do the trick, which is what prompted me to get it scanned at the dealer. If I knew i was gonna spend $290 at the dealer, I would have put out the other $100 and bought the DP tuner. Gonna look around under the hood today, the dealer told me to bring the truck back if I didnt feel the difference in a couple of weeks and they would rescan for free and go from there. They say its fixed, we'll see. Thanks for the replies, keep the ideas coming and Happy Holidays

Keep in mind that that dually probably had higher gearing than the Ex. so the SOTP feeling will be a little less in the Ex
