How can you tell if the engine is the original one for a '52 F1?? Considering the condition etc of the entire truck, I have assumed that mine has the original engine but you never know for sure - Did they put any numbers on the engine to 'match' it to a specific truck??

No numbers will match it to the truck. The truck VIN number will let you know if it should be an 8 or a 6. Casting numbers on the motor will let you know when the motor was manufactured, should be a little earler than the truck itself.

I'm familiar with Ford's date coding in the 60s/70s. Was it the same then - as far as the casting numbers on the engine etc??

What about the truck, does the warranty plate indicate the date the truck was built??

The Ford part number example below is a combination of information from the following sites:

Some of the information in the various web pages conflicts but I think the following is the correct interpretation.

EXAMPLE:

Engineering part number (on the part) C80E-6015-A

C - Decade code - C = 1960 decade was the first decade for this part
8 - Year code - 8 = 1968 was the first year for this part
O - Application code - O = Intermediate sedan - Fairlane, Torino
E - Part category code - E = Engine part
6015 - Part identifier - 6015 = Engine block
A - Sequential design revision - A = First release

Date Code (usually cast or stamped on the part) 7F05

7 - Year code - 7 = 1977 or 1987 or 1997
F - Month code - F = June
05 - Should be a two-digit number to indicate the day of month. E.g., 05 - fifth day of month, 22 - 22nd day of month, etc.


The actual letter or number codes for the other decades, years, applications, etc. can be found on the web sites I listed. With a little work you should be able to determine exactly when your engine block and heads were manufactured. Doesn't guarantee they are the originals but gives you more evidence. I don't remember what you have - 6 or 8?

No cast numbers anywhere on the flathead block tell when it was made. (as far as I've been able to discover, and I'm not an expert on 6's at all) Cast numbers on the bellhousing flange are worthless - except to local casting plants apparently. Some heads have casting numbers like 8BA or 8CM (48 truck-51 Ford and Merc respectively, EAB or EAC for the 52,53 F/M resp. These are only general series parts numbers.

Only number that might help would be on the intake flat of the V8 flathead, passenger rear. Should be a stamping of an alpha-numeric sequence that tells assembly date. If the engine was rebuilt by factory or the intake flat was shaved locally, those numbers will be missing.
