Score!

I know that not everyone is into shells, toppers, campers or whatever you want to call them but . . .

I picked up an Innovation Fiberglass shell this weekend for 75$.
Looked up the manufacturer and a price list to find this item retails for $1075 new.
This one is in good shape, just needs a little R&R here and there.
Finally I find one of those sweet deals that almost to good to pass up.

Cool beans! (Or whatever the current saying is!)

I picked up a used Leer shell last spring for my Ranger for $150, even gel-coated to match the truck. I guess those things go for close to a grand too.

Let's see some pics...!

I've been looking for one of those deals for my 05 Super Duty, w/ a short bed, in the wedgewood blue. I'm probably gonna have to bite the grenade and buy one new as I haven't seen anything even close, used.
Don't want one for my 74 F250. It would always be coming off and on as I use that truck as a truck. The shell would just get in the way on that one. But the 05 is my weekend fun truck so the shell would be cool. Too much money though, and too many other things to save up for. Someday...

I'll have to borrow a digital for some pics. it's kinda just stuck on there right now as I got it the afternoon before shift started again. A little clean up and proper mounting is in order. I am looking at painting to match, cause this one is silver and doesn't quite match red/white.
I know it's a shame to paint over a gel coat, I don't even know if it will work but I'll try on the hidden end first . . .

Tim, have you looked on craigslist, reno/tahoe? There's some stuff there, some kinda spendy though. Craiglist / chico is where I found this one.

Since my truck is the multi-purpose rig it wears cap in the winter, air gate in the summer and wood racks in the late summer/fall.

Now I have another reason to get going on my trailer project to get the matched set up and goin.

That's a pretty good lookin' shell, Rich. You thinking of going with red or white on it? I'm thinkin' red...

And yes, you can paint over gel-coat. I believe there's a special primer/sealer that you can get from any automotive paint store for it.

fyre82 11-14-2006 12:06 PM

It will definitely be red, a sort of crimson red that comes very close to the truck color, when its clean and well waxed.

I'll have to look into the primer sealer cause I don't want to scuff up the finish thats on there. Now, if it will quit raining on my day off so I can get the thing cleaned up removed and colored.

Nice find. I had one on my 89 F-150. If yours has exposed rivets, I would sand them and prime. That was the only spot on mine that showed its age. They all eventually started to rust  Happy painting, Jag

You're going to have to scuff up the current finish, the the primer/sealer needs something to "bite" into to stay on. That's the same reason el cheapo paint jobs peel so quickly, they don't bother with little details like prepping the old surface, just mask and shoot.

Yeah I know that I have to dull the glaze, just went through that on my bathroom but that's another sad story.

I will be experimenting with the end that fits to the cab, cause if all else fails and I bugger that up I can paint it black and never have a problem. :-roll

My neighbor is pretty fair with the gun, I think I could get him to shoot it for a few Sierra Nevada's. :-drink
