I have a 1998 Mercury Mountaineer with a 5.0L V-8, that the check engine light continues to come on despite the truck driving with no apparent problems. I had the check engine light diagnosed and it came up P1400 which I was told it was something to do with "manufactured control auxillary emission control". Can anyone tell me what I need to do to clear up this issue so I can have my truck inspected?

replace the part drive it for about 100miles and it will clear up. the systems the state uses to do the inspections will find out if you have just wiped out the code there is no way around it but to break down buy the part replace it and drive it to clear the code. get it inspected.

What part is needed as nobody except going to the Mercury Dealer and having them rediagnose the system can let me know? My plan was to find out what part was needed then replace the same and do as you suggested. I have looked everywhere to determine what part it is that I need. Thanks

what this is differential pressure feedback egr. (dpfe) it works with the pcmpowertrian control module. it is also know as the backpressure transducer, other words it controls the input pressure to the engine and the exhuast input pressures.


1. disconnect the neg batt cable
2. detach and label the wiring harness connector from the PFE/DPFE sensor.
3. disconnect all hoses from sensor.
4. remove the mounting nuts, then seprate the sensor from the mounting bracket.
5. if necessary, to remove the evr solenoid and the PFE/DPFE mounting bracket from upperintake manifold.

install in the reverse order. :-drink

Thanks for the advice as I will try and get a new DPFE Sensor and install the same and will let you know if it cures the problem!
