95 F350 E4OD Won't go into overdrive, shifts hard
Hi guys,
This is my first post. I bought a 95 F350 Crewcab long bed (Sold my 04 Silverado Z71 this morning) tonight and about twenty minutes after I bought it on the way home I lost overdrive. I spoke with the person I bought it from, and he told me I could bring it back tomorrow if I wanted but the thing is cherry. 460, 135k Dana 60/Sterling, for $5k. Looks brand new. Anyway, now that I lost OD, second and third shift noticably harder, and if you do a light brakestand with it, it makes a loud noise from the tranny, like a tapping. Also, before all of this happened (when I test drove it today, and it was fine) it has a longer than normal delay shifting into reverse, and then goes in hard. The fluid smells burnt. But did before this happened. Does anyone have any ideas what it could be? I don't know what to do, I like the truck, but I don't have the money to spend on a rebuild right now, and as of today I'm completely out of debt.. Oh, and it also makes noise when I put it in gear. Coming from the tranny. Put it in nuetral and it goes away... Thanks guys Chris<!-- google_ad_section_end --><!-- / message --> |
Search for my posts, I had similar problems just recently. :) Your truck is a Kentucky truck too! Siblings, anyway...
MLPS may be your problem, thats what was wrong with mine. It's a fairly cheap fix approx $40, compared to a tranny rebuild. Course this is assuming that you have a E40D. Course in comparision :) my truck isn't cherry... it was a work truck most it's life. 270k miles and climbing, it's on it's 3rd 460 and at least 2nd E40D, and it's second Borg-Warner Transfer case(through no fault of the first). These are sweet trucks! I hope you find a solution to your problem. |
Alright so im doing just about anything to avoid the school work that needs done!

me too. What does that mustang got in it mr?

The truck could have possibly a burned up rear band i am sure and some clutches possibly also. Also once the fluid turns dark from the burned up clutches & bands, that tells ya you need a routine overhual unless the transmission was beat to crap. If you know a buddy that's a technician just have him go through the transmission for ya. other words I wouldnt dive into it yourself.

And also the hard shifting isn't necessarily bad, but its just a default setting the transmission fluid pressure higher.(i don't exactly know why) but thats what they do when something else in the transmission is not doing its job.
Say a piston in the rear drum has a bad seal and fuild is getting past. That tells the electronics thats tells the valve body n boost valve to raise pressure to push the piston against the friction and steel plates to engage say 2nd or 3rd gear n such. but the tapping noise, i don't know what that would be though. I hope my knowledge helped you somewhat |
